With great mustache wax comes great responsibility (image by Martin Cathrae) |
This week we have a host-only podcast with Brannen, Scooter and me. I consider deep thoughts like, "Should I rename the weekly event posts?" and, "Why isn't there an instant-zombie filter on Instagram?" Speaking of fun apps that can fill your Facebook feed with cam pics of your cats, may I present Scoutmob (Aside: Dear Scoutmob, I'd love to continue bragging on you in exchange for money. Let me know if you're interested.)
I was led to Scoutmob not out of frustration because my friends and I can't find the restaurant "I Don't Care" or "Surprise Me" but because of the failings of Urbanspoon. It's a decent program once you mute the misophonia-inducing kaCHING, if it weren't for college towns. If you use Urbanspoon within 50 miles of a campus, the only thing on the local radar is a disease encrusted Waffle House with 3,193 five-star reviews. Also, Urbanspoon has a noted lack of a 'Stache Cam.
Speaking of mustachioed photos, I recently learned that Tumblr is useful for more than recycling reaction gifs from Reddit (or finding reaction gifs to spam through Reddit because you really believe you're the first one to have found an image of Doctor Who in the rain).

No idea where this is from, and the only non-tumblry place that I could find the file was a Russian cinemagraph site. |
But I found out that Tumblr is pretty amazing when I ran across Dermagraphique. It's a tattoo critique blog that has saved me from being swayed by Pinterest and FyeahTattoos into getting an upside-down, text-only, piece-of-shit tattoo. Which led us into a discussion about the lulz provided by sites like Ok Cupid Enemies, No Hope for the Human Race, and basically sounding exactly like the antagonist in this xkcd. I unsuccessfully tried to cheer us up with balloonicorns.
Finally, Brannen brings it up a notch with a rather high-brow discussion of cyberpunk. The Future is Now! There's beautiful 3D printed prosthetic limbs, a camera that lets you adjust the focus after you take the photo, and a memory card with wi-fi. I wind up backtracking on my dislike of Snow Crash (I know, blasphemy) because of how awesome Neal Stephenson's Kickstarter was.

This episode is basically a systematic attempt to destroy Scooter's checking account. As always, please remember to check out DC Geeks on:
Thanks for listening.
