A showcase of this week's finest geek and geek related activities for the week. Mark your calendars.
Looks more like an opera house than a livestream. Dota2, classy as fuck. (photo by Melissa Doroquez) |
Sunday
- Dota2 - Pubstomp at Public Tenley - Washington, DC - 3:00PM
- So, Dota2 is the eater of social lives, laying waste to the free time of all in its path - seems like if you took League of Legends, Evercrack, and then cut it with a intervention-worthy WoW addition. And at the international championship, first prize is this is the current prize pool. This shit is serious business. The championship will be live streaming live at our local Pubstomp. Check out the main site as the drama unfolds this week in Seattle (and for Compendium information).
- LARP/Battle Gaming - Amtgard of Alexandria - Alexandria, VA - 12:30PM
- A combination of battle games, live-action roleplay, and some actual fight time - Amtgard is having a battle day this Sunday afternoon. Amtgard is a nation-wide gaming society dedicated to the Sword and Sorcery genre (looks like Alexandria’s chapter falls into the Rising Sun and The Kingdom of Crystal Groves). The meetup page looks super welcoming, so if you’ve been looking for a LARP group, definitely stop by.
Is.. is there someone in there like Adam Savage's robot from SDCC? (photo by Scott Rubin) |
Longer Term
- Convention - Otakon - Baltimore, MD - Friday through Sunday
- The big one: the 20th anniversary of one of the biggest anime conventions. This is the time to pull out all the stops and bring your best cosplay game or however you prefer to otaku the hell out. If you listened to our podcast with a number of the Otakon/Otakorp leaders, you have heard hints and rumors of the utter greatness which shall usher forth this year. If you haven’t done so yet, let me warn you, online registration ends in THREE DAYS. Don’t get caught in the last minute lines.
- Pirates - Rock Hall Pirates & Wenches Fantasy Weekend - Rock Hall, MD - Friday through Sunday
- From rum tastings to kids’ events, this is an all-ages weekend of pirate-y fun. Keep an eye out for other former podcast guests of ours, the Pirates for Sail and their more family friendly set of tunes. The list of entertainers is extensive, and there’s dozens of other events - live pirate encampments, a ball, temp tattoos for the kids. If nothing else, you can bust out that pirate shirt you’ve never been able to wear and show it off all weekend with pride and swagger.
Did we miss something? If you have an event you’d like to promote that isn’t on this list, leave a comment or email us. Other weekly recurring events are listed on our website (such as Rocky, CCG tournaments, crazy themed happy hours). For more information, check out the calendars at DC Geeks.
http://bitgen.magfest.org/ is also this weekend, on Saturday, out in Baltimore, and sounds like it should be pretty awesome! Especially for those people who are impatient for MAGFest to roll back around.
