A showcase of this week's finest geek and geek related activities for the week. Mark your calendars.
The costuming at large events like Dragon*Con never ceases to amaze me. (image by Roger Chang) |
- Convention - Dragon*Con - Atlanta, GA - Friday through Monday
- This is the big one for the East Coast. Its a little out of our normal region, but cons have a gravity all their own, and the bigger they are, the further we’ll travel to them. Membership is still available at the door (though my sympathy for anyone standing in line for that). The programming is vast, the culture of the con is over the top, and the city is braced for tens of thousands of geeks, fans, and creators. If you can make it down, you owe it to yourself to experience the con at least once.
- Convention - WorldCon - Chicago, IL - Friday through Monday
- Ever wondered where the Hugo awards came from? This is the event. A floating con that, much like Discworld's Land of Elves, attaches itself to another con it travels beside for a time, WorldCon is where the awarding of the Hugos takes place. Attached this year to Chicon, its an easy flight or a relaxing roadtrip out. In addition to their own very hefty program offerings, plus hosting the Hugos this year, Chicon and Dragon*Con are presenting some cross convention programming this year, with sessions shared via the Interwebs.
- Convention - PAX Prime - Seattle, WA - Friday through Sunday
- So, quite a few cons this weekend. I figure if WorldCon is of note, than the darling of the convention circuit, PAX had to be on here too. I can’t find an updated version, but here’s a copy of 2011 PAX Bingo to take along. I’d replace a few of these with celebrity names like Wil Wheaton, Paul and Storm (yes, they’re one entry and it only counts if you see both), and JoCo. Regardless of which coast you’re on, have fun geeking out this week.

- Convention - TCEP 19 - Laurel, MD - Friday through Monday
- A challenger approaches! This weekend, if you don’t want to lock yourself into a car or plane for hours on end to get your con gaming fix, there’s also the very local TCEP. This year’s theme is “It’s the end of the world and we game on.” Make sure to find Area 42 if you head out to Laurel this weekend.
- Convention - The NOVA Open - Arlington, VA - Friday through Sunday
- Now, this is getting ridiculous. There’s also one of the largest war gaming conventions on the east coast going on this weekend. Whiskey, and Warhammer, and Minis, "oh my." The con’s homepage has a rather unique “roommate finder” available if you don’t want to shoulder the cost of a Crystal City hotel alone. Sign up before all the best tourneys are full.
- Con... - NonClave 2012 - Triangle, VA - Friday through Sunday
- This one isn’t strictly a con, but who knew Labor Day Weekend would be so geektastic!? For those of you unfamiliar, NonClave is a large annual event for the international World of Darkness LARP, One World by Night (or OWBN for short). If you’re interested, email one of the organizers to make sure the event is open to new or non-members before heading out to Prince William Forest.

- Nostalgia - Tron at AFI Silver - Silver Springs, MD - 7:00PM and Midnight
- AFI has got these anniversary events on lockdown. So, Tron’s 30 years old, and I was just explaining the other day how I’d never seen it. AFI’s now taken away my last excuse. Grab some friends and a DVD of the sequel and make this weekend a Daft-Punk-filled double feature. (Speaking of AFI, they’ve just added more showings of 2001: A Space Odyssey).
- Storytelling - The Ultimate Story Showcase at Black Cat - Washington, DC - 9:00PM
- The official description says it best, “A special edition of the very best stories from the very best comedians and storytellers in D.C., New York, and elsewhere. Featuring This American Life and The Moth alumni SM Shrake (Story League) and Jeff Simmermon (And I Am Not Lying) plus a special guest host and a bevy of unforgettable true personal stories.”
- ゴスロリ - Lolita Picnic by DC Anime Club - Washington, DC - 11:00AM
- Are you a loli at heart and miss showing off your look? Are you missing the company of civilized folk and an afternoon constitutional? Are you wondering what on earth a Lolita is (in this context)? The DC Anime club is having their annual Lolita Picnic this weekend at the Freer Gallery Garden. Its free, its a chance to see and be seen, and maybe even meet some of your fellow cosplayers and fans from around the region.
Did we miss something? If you have an event you’d like to promote that isn’t on this list, leave a comment or email us. Other weekly recurring events are listed on our website (such as Rocky, CCG tournaments, crazy themed happy hours). For more information, check out the calendars at DC Geeks.
