Longer Term
- Theater - The Intergalactic Nemesis - Washington, DC - Friday through Sunday
- Billed as a "Live Action Graphic Novel" this goes beyond theater to include radio drama, comic book art, as three actors voice dozens of characters. What makes the story really come to life is the Foley artist and keyboardist who perform the thousands of sound effects and score. On a two-story-high screen, the comic book is projected in all its pulp glory inspired by 1930's serials. Their note about it being for the "kid in everyone" combined with the 8 and up age limit does make it sound like a kids' event, rather than just family friendly.
- Adventure - Warrior Dash Maryland - Mechanicsville, MD - Saturday and Sunday
- The Warrior Dash is part 5k part hell as you battle over a dozen obstacles, and the proceeds go to St Judes to battle cancer. So if you've been training to be Batman, remember that registration ends tomorrow. For those of you who haven't, keep in mind that (at least according to a cursory Google search) the race has been fatal. So remember that scene from Kickass, you know, the one where Kickass, well, gets his ass kicked and winds up in traction for months? Don't do that.
- Convention - Steampunk World's Fair - Piscataway, NJ - Friday through Sunday
- For those of you aching to dust off your woolens and polish up the brass, we've got just the event for you. With dozens of bands, workshops and panels to give the faint-hearted vapors, and a selection of additional events to make a steam-powered heart patter (e.g. Absinthe Tasting, a Formal Ball, and a Facial Hair Contest). It's like a slightly coal-dusted, Tesla-loving heaven! The Jeff Mach event is yet another excuse to head north for the weekend.

Wednesday
- Trekking - "Secret Fan Screening" - Not Sure - No Idea!
- According to the MD Star Trek and the Sci-Fi/Fantasy Outpost meetup groups, there's going to be a special fan screening of Star Trek: Into Darkness! Instead of waiting until midnight on Thursday to see the movie because it's technically released on Friday, there may be a way to lord spoilers over other geeks even sooner. However, there's suspiciously no easy link to the event, so you'll have to check out the Meetup Groups (Virginia and Maryland) to see if this is legit.
Friday
- Sideshow - Cheeky Monkey Sideshow - Washington, DC - 8:45PM and 11:00PM
- For those of you who don't remember the Cheeky Monkeys, they include our friend and sometimes podcast guest, Mab Just Mab. So if you want to be highly entertained and - if you're squeamish - mildly shocked, this is a great chance to head down to Black Cat. And for those of you who want to try before you buy, Mab has some videos up of her solo act, including a straight jacket escape (autoplay warning).
The meme is even outdated. Tick, tock. (text by someone without a Quickmeme login) |
- Movies - Hellboy at AFI Silver - Silver Spring, MD - 10:20AM
- Why would AFI be showing a nearly 10 year old (yes, really) comic book movie? There are vague memories of a flamey psycho ex girlfriend chick and a fishboy who made the movie wonderful, but why? The answer is as simple as it is exciting: AFI is doing a series on the films of Guillermo del Toro. Which means the comic book fans can enjoy Hellboy now, and the artsy film geeks can be thrilled by Pan's Labyrinth in June.
- Derby - NoVA and DC Bouts - Washington, DC and Sterling, VA - various times
- There are two DC Rollergirls Bouts this weekend at the usual venue, the Armory. At 4:00PM the Majority Whips face off DC Demoncats, and at 5:45PM it's the Cherry Blossom Bombshells vs Scare Force One. Meanwhile, down in Virginia at 4:00PM, the Vineyard Vixens compete against the Backwoods Rollers. So we've got NoVA and DC, you can't tell me there isn't a Southern MD derby team I'm missing. Link us in the comments below so our Marylander friends can get the hot violence hookup!
Did we miss something? If you have an event you’d like to promote that isn’t on this list, leave a comment or email us. Other weekly recurring events are listed on our website (such as Rocky, CCG tournaments, crazy themed happy hours). For more information, check out the calendars at DC Geeks.
