I didn't realize how many misconceptions I had about minis and wargaming. For example, I didn't realize that it was ok to get into minis without getting into painting the minis. So there's no reason for would-be players to get intimidated by the stunning paint jobs. For a more detailed rundown of how to get started in the hobby, check back here tomorrow for Rush's guest post.
The podcast included our usual tangents, from board games (Chaos in the Old World), French minis games (Hell Dorado), comic books (Life & Times of Scrooge McDuck), and guerrilla restoration (Untergunther).
One of the great things about minis gaming is that there always seems to be fellow players around. I can't remember the last time I went into a game shop and didn't see at least one group talking about or playing 40k. In addition to giving out advice to newbs, the local game shops and organizations have some cool events:
- Clash for the Cure raises money for Susan G. Komen (Check out Rush's pink High Elf).
- Games Workshop's Games Day is this Saturday in Chicago.
- With, as Rush puts it, gaming good enough to be on ESPN, NOVA Open is Labor Day weekend.
If you're interested in minis, check out your local game stores in person or on Meetup. To help inspire you, here's another jaw-dropping photo of Rush's work.
