Podcast - Interview with MAGFest

MAGFest, I can say from experience you treat your press guests right. <3

MAGFest let us into their super secret lair up in Maryland. The amazing thing about this podcast is that it was recorded in an empty storage unit, in the middle of a thunderstorm, and there's like a dozen con volunteers sitting quietly in the wings. Yet the audio comes across as just a bit echoey. Behold my awesome podcasty powers! Would you kindly give it a listen?

Because the con falls early in 2013, right after the inevitable collapse of society and destruction of life as we know it, this year's festival has a post-apocalyptic theme. And it is a festival, not a convention, and the podcast reveals the full nuances of that distinction. Better yet? MAGFest is a "weekend-long video game party with a rock concert." Speaking of rock concerts, their list of musical performers is already a half dozen pages long. This year's special guest is Yuzo Koshiro, making his US debut.

Keep in mind that MAGFest isn't supported by a host of sponsors. The festival runs 100% on ticket sales. The supporter badges are there to give everyone a chance to help out the con, and pick up some sweet freebies. They don't believe in ripping people off, so if you want to support beyond the badge, make sure you bring a lot of friends.

This year's event will have several new features. Most notably: Indie game developers will get free vendor tables. The space is first come first served, so they will run out of the promotional tables, but contact the organizers and get the hell in there now while you still can. There will also be a demo scene party for programmers to really show off their competitive skills. And finally, the "Games on Film" (or the "Film and Gaming" depending on whether you bother with acronyms) will include film showings.

MAGFest will be at the same location as last year in National Harbor for Jan 3-6, 2013. Pre-registration is already open, and if the convention grows with the same exponential speed as the last few years, you'll want to sign up early.
DC Geeks has a rather strong contingent going to MAGFest again this year, so keep an eye out for us and say hi! Thanks to MAGFest for letting us hang out and podcast! Sunny is best kitty.
