This Week in Geek - 2012/07/16

A showcase of this week's finest geek and geek related activities for the week. Mark your calendars.

Remember, if you're blowing stuff up at
DangerCon, take photos! (via wannabeefarmer

Longer Term
  • Convention - DangerCon - Goldvein, VA - Friday through Sunday
    • So, you all know I have a love and fascination with Maker events. And I love camping, the freedom of it, the isolation. And now... now some group of madmen and raving lasses have combined them. Local Maker groups camping out, testing pyrochem projects, forge work, maker discussions and demonstrations, as well as the company of such nifty, nifty people. Sponsored by Fredhack and Nova Labs, pop by the sites before planning to head to the site.
  • Hacking - Black Hat - Las Vegas, NV - Saturday through next Thursday
    • The business side of hacking. Passes to this conference tend to inspire the envy of everyone I who works in security or programming. There's still time to register if you can get the time off and have the spare cash. The homepage says there's a chance to save $400 on the on-site price, so scurry off to register become the alpha geek in your circle.
  • Convention - Historicon - Fredericksburg, VA - Wednesday through Sunday
    • I will admit, this was a con I had never even heard of, despite the fact that its half an hour away. And then a looked. And was utterly fascinated. Hundreds of games, thousands of die hard hobbiests gathering together to show off and challenge one another in battlefields from across history and across the imagination. This year’s theme focuses on battles of colonial warfare, imperialism, and gun boat diplomacy. The history fan in me is agog.
Thursday
  • The Goddamn Batman - Midnight release of Dark Knight Rises - A theater near you - 12:00AM
    • Right, I don't need to tell you this, but just in case you forgot (see our service to the community re: Mothers' Day) - the final Chris Nolan Batman film is out this week. For this I am heavily advocating finding a group to go with, costuming till you're one cackle away from having security called on you, and going to savor the night. There are meetups in Frederick and Alexandria
Friday
  • Whedon - Can't Stop the Serenity - Arlington, VA - 9:30PM
    • Can't Stop the Serenity is a traveling charity fund raiser based around the Firefly universe (and specifically, the Serenity movie). Makes sense. The browncoats weren't all saints, but there are some jobs a man shouldn't take and some things he's got to do. Not to mention that this time its at the drafthouse, one of the more fun movie venues in the area. Hook up with some fellow fans, toss on your fanciest dress, your tightest pants, and go support a good cause.

See, Labyrinth Games loves Hyperbole and a Half too!

Sunday
  • Gaming - Marvel Heroic RP Civil War at Labyrinth - Washington, DC - 1:00 to 6:00PM
    • SDCC is just winding down and the ripples are still spreading through the comic and wider geek worlds of what's coming next. Labyrinth Games is a fun local shop focused on (surprise!) games. Put them together and you get a chance to play through one of the more powerful and popular storylines from the last generation at Marvel. RSVP is necessary to play with this new supplement though, so contact them soon.
Monday
  • TNG - Star Trek 25th Anniversary Event - Assorted theaters - 7:00PM
    • Yes, it really has been that long since TNG. Scary, right? But it's also a great reason to check out episodes 106 "Where No One Has Gone Before" and "Datalore" as well as unseen interviews and behind-the-scenes content. Meet up with us at the AMC Hoffman in Alexandria. Can't make it at 7:00? There are a few theaters doing later showings, check for tickets here.
Did we miss something? If you have an event you’d like to promote that isn’t on this list, leave a comment or email us. Other weekly reoccurring events are listed on our website (such as Rocky, CCG tournaments, crazy themed happy hours). For more information, check out the calendars at DC Geeks.
