The first thing I notice about all Otakon photos is just the sheer number of attendees. (via Scott Rubin) |
Longer Term
- Convention - Otakon - Baltimore, MD - Friday through Sunday
- Odds are, if you're an anime fan, cosplayer, con lover, or a friend of any of these, you already have weekend passes to Otakon (and may have called dibs on sleeping in the tub, if you pack a room the way my undergrad friends and I always did). My RSS feed this week has been full to the brim of artists announcing their alley table locations. It's a great place for you and 30k of your closest friends to hang out.
- Festival - 2012 Fringe Festival - Washington, DC - now through Sunday
- "Capital Fringe Festival is the only major unjuried, self-producing, open-access Festival in the Washington, DC area." And it's starting to wind down, but don't worry. There's still more going on at the festival than any one person could physically attend. With an average of 45 shows per day, you can find everything from Rozencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead to Tent of Dreams: An Occuplay to Burlesque + Belly Laughs.
- Beer - DogFish Head Tasting - Alexandria, VA - 5:00PM
- Exactly what it sounds like. I blame Otakon for the dearth of geeky events this week, so I'm resorting to beer. Around here, it seems like DFH beer is the real gateway into trying unusual microbrews. I love it, you should try it. And I'm going to maintain that this is a geek event because of the brewery's badass steampunk treehouse.
- Video Game Music - Legend of Zelda at Wolf Trap - Vienna, VA - 8:30PM
- I love that Wolf Trap cycles through geek music. Beyond the fact that LoZ and its music are awesome, did you guys realize it's already the 25th anniversary for the first game? Yikes. I'm psyched for this event because it's like if Wolf Trap's usual video game concert just skipped all the songs that I didn't know or care about (sorry, MegaMan fans).

Friday
- Caveat Emptor - Aisha Tyler at DC Improv - Washington, DC - 8:00PM
- Ok, I found this while browsing Eventful. However, I couldn't seem to find it on either Aisha Tyler's site or The DC Improv site. Dislcaimer aside, when I found this, it was hard not to fangirl out. I love Archer (there's even a perfectly timed Kenny Loggins performance to set me up for a "Danger Zone" reference)! And Aisha Tyler seems like a total badass, so it's definitely worth hunting around for tickets.
- Space - The Planets, An HD Odyssey (Wolf Trap) - Vienna, VA - 8:30PM
- Legend of Zelda isn't your thing? You prefer real classical music and some hard science? Then this really is your dream event. Wolf Trap's hooking up the HD screens and accompanying Holst's Planets suite with breathtaking NASA imagery. Couldn't ask for a more perfect pairing.
Also Defcon. Additionally, Iron Sky tickets are now being offered for the DC Geeks showing! Link: http://www.tugg.com/events/1126#.UA3bVPXCQR5
