This Week in Geek: Wizards, Whimsy, and Wonders

(via The Wind Rises Official Website)

Ongoing
  • Myths & Legends: telling fantastical stories through art - Solomons, MD - Through May 4
    • As long as there have been stories, myths, legends, folktales or fables, there have been artists trying to give shape to the fantastical landscapes and the beings that inhabit them. This exhibit, a little bit farther than the Metro area proper, brings to them life in painting and sculpture.
Monday
  • The Wind Rises - Bethesda, MD
    • Hayao Miyazaki's last film comes out in a limited release today. Like the rest of Studio Ghibli films, you can expect it to be visually stunning and touch you in your heart space. They're also the only movie we've seen that uses Tumblr for their official website.
Wednesday
  • Wonderland Circus - Washington, D.C. - 8 P.M.
    • A variety show presented by Capital City Showcase and held at the Wonderland Ballroom. There's a show every Wednesday, but this one is their one year anniversary; when could be a better time to drop in for your first show? Admission is free, though they do suggest a $5 donation for the artists. Not a high price to pay for a night of comedians, storytellers, and burlesque entertainment.
Thursday
  • Karaoke Cup VI - Washington, D.C. - 9:00 P.M.
    •  As huge fans of karaoke, this plug is not biased at all. Rock and Roll Hotel is hosting their Karaoke Cup, the come-all, end-all competition for the District's most awesome karaoke performers. If the finalists have any of the flair they do at Kostume Karaoke, count us in.
  • Comics Against Humanity - Washington, D.C. - 8:30 P.M.
    • By now, Cards Against Humanity has made its rounds among nerd and non-nerd alike. Folks at the Bier Baron and LYGO DC have come together to play a weird, part Bingo, part party game, hybrid version of your favorite (or most hated) card game. Tickets are $10 at the door, but if you reserve ahead, you get 2 free rail drinks with your ticket. Not too shabby.
  • WM Gamer Symphony Orchestra Open House Rehersal - Rockville, MD - 7:15 PM
    • So the WMGSO has been making a bigger splash lately, building off of the awesome that the GSO over at UMD has thrown down. They are growing and welcome people to come out and check them out.  Looking forward to their summer concert. :)

Did we miss something? If you have an event you’d like to promote that isn’t on this list, leave a comment or email us. Other weekly recurring events are listed on our website (such as Rocky,  CCG tournaments, crazy themed happy hours). For more information, check out the calendars at DC Geeks.
