A showcase of this week's finest geek and geek related activities for the week. Mark your calendars.
Longer Term
- Holiday - Labor Day Weekend - Everywhere - All Weekend
- From the above link, "With the decline in union membership, the holiday is generally viewed as a time for barbeques and the end of summer vacations." [muffled struggle as editor kicks writer out momentarily]. So you probably have a three day weekend! Yaaay! And that means ALL the Cons! Here are some local and non-local examples.
Some say, his real identity is Wade Wilson... And that he was bitten by a radioactive Bugatti Veyron. All we know is, he's called the Stig. (Dragon*Con 2012 photo by Counse) |
- Convention - Dragon*Con - Atlanta, GA - Friday through Monday
- It's amusing that there's a "Who to See" guest list page on the Dragon*Con site. To give you an idea, it's so long that it's broken into alphabetical sections. There's a reason it's always on our list, despite being in Georgia. It's indescribably immense. The answer to "So what is there to do?" is simply "yes" (Disclaimer: barring anything illegal in the state of Georgia).
- LARP - OWBN's Nonclave 2013 - Prince William Forest Park, VA - Friday through Monday
- Apologies in advance to One World by Night, but for those unfamiliar - the World of Darkness LARP organization is similar to the organization formerly known as the Camarilla (now Mind's Eye Society). If you're nodding and going, "I know some of these words!" you may want to skip down. The big weekend-long roleplay event is co-hosted by the Northern Virginia, Fredericksburg, and Harrisonburg chapters. Listed are Camarilla, Sabbat, and Garou, so break out those custom contacts and fangs and see about joining in.
- Convention - TECP XX - Sterling, VA - Friday through Monday
- Their website is a bit terse, but from what we can gather it's a gaming con, and it's local. Looks like a lot of tabletop games, some poker, some roleplay. The LARP revolves around the a reunion of Miskatonic alumni. And online registration gets you 25% off. However, the DC/NoVA Gamer's Guild is headed that way for a meetup so at least you won't be checking out a new con alone.
I've never seen itty bitty terrain look quite so beautifully desolate. (PAX Prime 2012 photo by Chase N.) |
- Convention - PAX Prime - Seattle, WA - Friday through Monday
- If Dragon*Con's too all-inclusive for the gaming purist in you, I hope you have tickets for PAX because they sold out ridiculously fast. If you weren't one of the Elect allowed in this year, take solice in the fact that so many of us will have our noses pressed to our monitors, looking on via Twitter and YouTube, pining away like Dickensian children. Or for those of you too proactive for a pity party, consider donating to Child's Play - Penny Arcade's charity that helps get toys and games to hospital-bound kids.
Wednesday
- Geek Holiday - Read Comics in Public Day - All Day - Everywhere
- Here's the shout out from The Mary Sue for last year's event. I don't know that there's nearly as much stigma against reading comic books as there may have been ten or even five years ago, but less stigma isn't the goal. The goal is no stigma. So check out the links above and their Twitter, this hashtag, and the Flickr group. Take advantage of the chance to fly your nerd flag after picking up your Wednesday stash of fresh comics.
Saturday
- Burlesque - Pastius Revelio: A Burlesque Tribute to Harry Potter - Washington, DC - 8:30PM
- Many of our favorite performers are getting together again to celebrate hotness and a new corner of nerd-dom! The Evil League of Ecdysiasts of Whedonism and DCG podcast fame, have a new Harry Potter themed show. Their title's faux Latin is extremely appropriate. It's about as thinly veiled as Rowling's spell names. The event's at the Bier Baron and tickets are available in advance if you don't want to duel your way in.
Did we miss something? If you have an event you’d like to promote that isn’t on this list, leave a comment or email us. Other weekly recurring events are listed on our website (such as Rocky, CCG tournaments, crazy themed happy hours). For more information, check out the calendars at DC Geeks.
