A showcase of this week's finest geek and geek related activities for the week. Mark your calendars.
Longer Term
- Convention - Darkover - Timonium, MD - Friday through Sunday
- Its the thirty-fifth year for this scifi convention, and the offerings are looking particularly solid this year. In addition to music and crafting sessions, Darkover has several dedicated programming tracks this year, with a distinct focus on literature and writing, creation, a steampunk focused track, and even an esoteric practices track. Add in a small but deep dealer collection, easy to navigate hotel, and a long term staff, and it adds up to an enjoyable weekend.

- Makering - Care and Feeding of a Makerbot - Reston, VA - 7:00PM
- There’s only four more spots open for the class (although there is also a waiting list and a second event planned). My first thought was “if you have enough cash to drop on a Makerbot, surely you’d pay attention to its care,” but that’s just it: Most of us don’t have the money, so we use equipment at local makerspaces. In which case, it’s really damn important to know how to care for the equipment correctly. Or you could just go and gawk at how awesome 3D printing is. Either way, looks like a great event.
- Makering - Work and Play at NoVALabs - Reston, VA - 7:00PM
- Not interested in the class above, but still want to checkout the local makerspace at NoVALabs? Then I hope you’re not busy Wednesday night. Bring a project, some snacks, or your expertise. Take a tour or the space and meet like-minded tinkerers. If you’re more in the mood to be productive, then just take advantage of the workspace and get down to work on your latest project.
- FutureTense - Who should govern the internet? - Washington, DC - 9:00AM
- Have a few hours to do something cerebral before heading into the evening’s societally mandated food coma? Interested in keeping as up to date with the upcoming UN decisions about the governance of the internet? Have the day off and want a good reason to postpone heading home by just a few more hours? FutureTense has its usual stunning array of experts coming together to discuss the issue.

- Shopping - Area 42 Game Day and Super Sale - Dulles, VA - 2:00PM
- Black Friday sales are awesome. For members of Area 42 Games, it’s an awesome 42% off (25% for non-members). The event is also great for those of you who just want to hide away from the craziness of Black Friday because it doubles as a game day. The event is the usual $5 for non-members and free for members.
- Gaming - Small Business Saturday at Labyrinth - Washington, DC - All Day
- The second awesome sale this week is at Labyrinth. They’ll have cookies and cider (as if you need your arm twisted to head out to a game shop, amirite?), but it’s a great way to knock out most of the geeks on your Christmas list. Shop local and support the really great small businesses we have around here.
- Pirates - Gamers’ Brunch at Piratz Tavern - Silver Spring, MD - 12:30PM
- After a long and glutenous week, there’s nothing quite like friends, games, and rum drinks to settle both your stomach and your soul. No, seriously. The Tavern crew are a welcoming bunch, the setting is a balm for the historical-fantasy-fun geek, and the lovely combination of a challenging game and a stiff drink can fortify you for the weeks to come.
Did we miss something? If you have an event you’d like to promote that isn't on this list, leave a comment or email us.
