This Week in Geek - 10/09/2012

A showcase of this week's finest geek and geek related activities for the week. Mark your calendars.

Cheeky Monkey is waiting for you...

Longer Term
  • Sideshow - Cheeky Monkey Sideshow at MD Renfaire - Crownsville, MD - Saturday and Sunday
    • Mab Just Mab and the Cheeky Monkey Sideshow will be performing at the Maryland Renfaire this weekend. I haven’t been putting the MDRF events on the calendar because honestly, it could fill this queue pretty quickly, and this weekend isn’t themed so there shouldn’t be the packed hoards of people there are for, say, Oktoberfest (making it the perfect weekend to attend and see some sideshow badassery).
  • Con - Small Press Expo - Bethesda - Saturday and Sunday
    • While ComicCon was a lot of fun, its the SPX that feeds my soul. Devoted to small press and independent comics, what hooks me even harder is that they don’t allow retailers to sell at the expo. If someone is selling you a comic at SPX, they are the writer or publisher of that comic. Last year the expo drew more than 3000 attendees and 450 exhibitors. Expand your horizons, take some cash, and hit up the expo. I know I have yet to be disappointed. (Also keep an eye out for Super Art Fight!)
Wednesday
  • Music - Amanda F’ing Palmer and the Grand Theft Orchestra - Washington, DC - 7:00 PM
    • Yes, I’m indulging my personal tastes here. Amanda Palmer’s music isn’t for everyone, but she really does embody the driven, focused art geek. You should just see the stuff that came out to her Kickstarter backers (what’s that space between steampunk and diselpunk?), she’s one of us. And she’ll be appearing with the Grand Theft Orchestra in DC this week. Grab a ticket, toss on your best costume, and go to the show. Plan on participating. Trust me.

Come and join us!

Friday
  • Burlesque - Valentine Candy Presents: "Boobs in Space" - Washington, DC - 9:30PM
    • We’re all well aware of fan service in scifi films. What happens when you turn that idea around and make the sci-fi the fan service? Glorious, geeky, home-grown burlesque is what you get. Fire spinning, inner aliens revealed, anal probing, I mean, come on - what more could you ask for on a  Friday night.
Saturday
  • Heroclix - Learn to Play Heroclix with Geek Night Out - Washington, DC - 2:00PM
    • So, since I’ve decided to type this up, there’s now only one available space left in the demo. But fear not, loyal listeners! The lovely Labyrinth Games is throwing an open Heroclix Demo. If you aren’t familiar with Heroclix, never fear! Its a comicbook based minis fighting game (if you can think of another genre to mix in there, please let me know) that is easy to pick up and a lot of fun. Especially if the in character trash talking starts.

Did we miss something? If you have an event you’d like to promote that isn’t on this list, leave a comment or email us. Other weekly recurring events are listed on our website (such as Rocky, CCG tournaments, crazy themed happy hours). For more information, check out the calendars at DC Geeks.
