This Week in Geek: Intellectual Scavenger Hunt and the World of Yesteryear!

A showcase of this week's finest geek and geek related activities for the week. Mark your calendars.

Thursday
  • Pirates - Misbehavin' Maidens invade Piratz Tavern - Silver Spring, MD - 8:00PM
    • Thanks to Annie for the reminder for this one! Keep in mind that this falls on the Piratz Tavern's "Thievin' Thursday" - a happy hour full of discounts and grog. The Maidens' PG-13 event promises singing, but enough mild bawdiness that if you're working on keeping your kid in their bubble of innocence as long as possible, you may want to get a sitter. This will be a recurring event. There's no cover, but the ladies always welcome tips to fill their piraty, um, chests (SFW, but autoplaying YouTube link).
Friday
  • Truth? - We Steal Secrets: The Story of Wikileaks - Silver Spring, MD - "Check back for times"
    • Award-winning documentary filmmaker Alex Gibney details Julian Assange's creation of Wikileaks. This rise is parallelled by the fall and imprisonment of Pfc. Bradley Manning. According to AFI Silver, this is a DC-area exclusive - not really surprising given the film's controversial nature. If federal employers treat it like they did the mirror sites, maybe skip this one if you're cleared. It's not paranoid if it's true.
  • Zombies - Zombie Bash 2013 - Herndon, VA - 7:00PM
    • Well, we thought we had zombies pretty well covered last week, but somehow this bash slipped through the cracks. Meet at dusk for an indoor/outdoor, high-intensity survival game. It's at Frying Pan Farm Park, which with the dimming light of the summer eve, could easily be the set of a great rural survival horror game. Check out their Facebook for more information and to chat with future zomb chow. Rules are on the official website link above.
Saturday
  • Gaming - Race to Adventure - Washington, DC - 11:00AM to 3:00PM
    • Labyrinth Games is teaming up with Evil Hat Productions to bring you a taste of the successful kickstarter game, Race to Adventure. How can you not love a game whose description starts off with "The Spirit of the Century!" and an event page that starts "Strap on your rocket pack!" The game is family-friendly and takes about 20-30 minutes. So it's perfect if you and your brood are beginning to get a bit tired of Small World and Apples to Apples.

You love of Sudoku can't save you. Unless you rock it like Vetinari.

Sunday
  • INT - Washington Post Hunt - Washington, DC - 12:00PM
    • Begun in 2008, at the event you will start with nothing but your wits and five coordinates. The map is in the Washington Post magazine (they'll have some there for you if you don't already buy it for the crosswords). Metro, don't drive, to Freedom Plaza, and come prepared to face off against thousands of Mensa wannabes. There are opening questions, and those will lead you to the five puzzle sites. Read more on the Wikipedia stub and external links.

Did we miss something? If you have an event you’d like to promote that isn't on this list, leave a comment or email us. Other weekly recurring events are listed on our website (such as Rocky, CCG tournaments, crazy themed happy hours). For more information, check out the calendars at DC Geeks.
