This Week in Geek 2011/11/06

A showcase of this week's finest geek and geek related activities for the week. Mark your calendars.

Longer term
  • Theater Cabaret Macabre - Silver Spring, MD - Thursday through Sunday
    • This is the last week that the Cabaret runs. The Washington Post lauds the "light but witty vaudeville, which pays unabashed (and acknowledged) tribute to the black-crepe-draped aesthetic of artist and writer Edward Gorey."

Today!
Remember, DST ends today. You have an extra hour to get to these on time.
  • General - Nerdist Podcast postponed - Washington, DC - unknown new date
    • There's a tiny note on the 9:30 Club's website that says, "This show has been postponed. A new date will be announced shortly. All current tickets will be honored for the new date." We'll keep an eye out for the rescheduled show.
  • DCWeek - Hackathon - Washington, DC - 8:00AM-6:00PM
    • Here's why I listed this separately, besides the fact that it's today: "A $20,000 prize pool has just been announced thanks to the SBA's Apps for Entrepreneurs challenge!" There's an additional 10k prize pool for those building Windows Mobile apps. Go forth and win, my code monkey friends!

Lots of hacker events this week. (via Jonathas Rodrigues)

  • Hacker - HacDC's "Visuals for Programmers" - Washington, DC - 4:00-8:00PM
    • Emily Dunne is cramming 4 years of an art degree into a 12-week course. Attend each week to fill out a professional-level portfolio. Here's the wiki entry with required supplies. Suggested donation is $5-$25, they ask that you please bring a PayPal receipt. I wanted to make sure I posted this early enough for readers to make the first class.
Tuesday

  • General - Election Day - Maryland (7:00AM-8:00PM) and Virginia (6:00AM-7:00PM)
    • Sorry, DC, taxation without representation continues.
  • Film - Found Footage Festival - Arlington, VA - 7:00PM
    • Found vs. Found - magazine and footage go head to head, "to determine once and for all whether found notes or found videos will reign supreme." No one under 18, and they're anticipating selling out so grab tickets early.
Friday
  • Gaming - DC Games Festival at Artisphere - 9:00AM-4:00 PM
    • Enjoy a day of Live Action Spy Party, 3½ Ring Circus, and other locally designed games. Admission is free, but they ask that you register online to help them keep an accurate headcount. Also, if you donate a little, you can get all sorts of cool stuff.
  • Film - This Is Spinal Tap! - Silver Spring, MD - 11/11/11 at 11:00PM
    • "These go to eleven." If you haven't seen Spinal Tap, then here's a chance to understand that xkcd, and to understand all those songs you downloaded for Rock Band. And really, you can't let all those elevens go to waste on another night of Minecraft.
Saturday
  • Beer - DC Brau Tour and Tasting - 1:00-4:00PM
    • Fermentation without representation. Frustrated that you didn't get to vote on Tuesday? DC Brau is too. They seem pretty awesome, and on Saturdays they have tours and tastings. Bring your growlers and fill up.
The DC Hackerspace is enough to impress even Dale Dougherty
(from O'Reilly Media) and Gareth Branwyn (from Make Online).

Sunday
  • Hacker - HacDC's "Visuals for Programmers" - Washington, DC - 2:00-6:00PM
    • This is just reminder because the second class is at an odd time. The full description is the same as above.
  • General - November Book Discussion on Hitchhiker's Guide - Fairfax, VA - 1:00PM
    • Meet-up with the Fairfax Fiction Book Club and talk about one of the favorites of science fiction. Don't forget your towel. Admission is $2.00. Keep an eye on their site for the location.

An exciting week! Get to it! Other weekly reoccurring events are listed on our website (such as Rocky, CCG tournaments, crazy themed happy hours). For more information, check out the calendars at DC Geeks.
