Longer Term
  • Convention - Baltimore Comic-Con - Baltimore, MD - Saturday and Sunday
    • Con hours are Saturday 10am to 7pm and Sunday 10am to 5pm. In its 14th year, this convention is still the host of the Harvey Awards (a $125 ticket gets you into the full shebang, from cocktails to dinner right on through the awards to the gift bag). Tickets aren't for the entire event, but a bit à la carte depending on who and what you're there to experience. Please note that although Stan Lee and a few other guests are unable to participate this year, the guest listings are still impressive. Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes are running multiple special events to view their new super groovy movie - you may want to sneak in snacks.
  • LotR - Fellowship of the Ring with live orchestral music - Vienna, VA - Friday and Saturday
    • WolfTrap throws some excellent geek events. This weekend, there are two chances to see the opening to the great trilogy in HD on huge screens as a live orchestra follows along with the Grammy and Oscar-winning score by Howard Shore. Tickets range from $25 to $58 depending on your seat (pay $25, bring your own chairs, come early, and bring a picnic - seriously, it's the best way to WolfTrap), and both showings are at 7:30PM. Also, remember this is WolfTrap. You don't just have to outrun the halfling to win at parking, you do actually have to outrun everyone.
  • Beer - DC Beer Festival - Washington, DC - Friday and Saturday
    • There are three time slots in which to catch this event: Friday (7-10pm) and Saturday (1-4pm and 6-9pm) and admission is $40. However, that price gets you casses to live music, games, food, and of course beer. The admission price includes unlimited tastings, but tickets will not be sold at the door so make sure to snag some (and probably some cab/metro fare) before heading out.

Thursday

  • FutureTense - Open Internet Goes to Court - Washington, DC - 3:00 to 4:30PM
    • Advocates, legislative representatives, law professors, and members of Free Press and Open Technology Institute are gathering to discuss the importance of the oral arguments in DC's Circuit Court next Monday regarding Verizon's lawsuit against the FCC's Open Internet Order. "The outcome of the case is important to preserving the Internet as an open platform for free speech, civic participation, news and information, commerce and everyday communications." The discussions will focus around how outcomes could change the face of emerging communications infrastructure.
Saturday

  • SCA - University of Atlantia - Front Royal, VA - 9:00 to 5:30
    • Check here for additional event information. Last time, attendees had the opportunity to spend all day wandering around gathering all the brewing information the kingdom had to offer (like Aine did). This time, the Course Catalog seems to focus more on clothing and combat - please note combat courses are usually meant for those with experience who show up with appropriate gear rather than merely an interest in theory. The University is always made freely available to attendees, however it's far from free to run the event. Please plan on bringing a $5-10 donation per attendee.

Sunday

  • Gaming - Mars Needs Mechanics! - Washington, DC - 1:00 to 3:00PM
    • Meet DC game designer Ben Rosset and try out his Kickstarter success, Mars Needs Mechanics! Set in 1873 London, this game is stuffed all the cogs, steam, monocles, and top hats that your little steam-powered heart can take. Queen Victoria herself has called upon you (Yes, you!) to take up your wrench and get cracking! India has not slaked the empire's thirst for conquest and nor shall Earth itself. You are to take to the stars and colonize Mars! Of course, first you have to go through a bit of a job test... (RSVP on Eventbrite)

Did we miss something? If you have an event you’d like to promote that isn’t on this list, leave a comment or email us. Other weekly recurring events are listed on our website (such as Rocky, CCG tournaments, crazy themed happy hours). For more information, check out the calendars at DC Geeks.
