This Week in Geek: Art, Parody, Dye, and Pride

A showcase of this week's finest geek and geek related activities for the week. Mark your calendars.

Has to be at least a bit nerdy with a header icon like that.

Longer Term
  • Pride (and a little burlesque) - Capital Pride - Washington, DC - now through Sunday
    • Capital Pride is a non-profit dedicated to serving the LGBTA community through education, entertainment, outreach and celebrations. Their calendar of events for this week is packed. The Black Cat is hosting a burlesque show on Friday (usual 8:45 and 11:00PM) to honor the celebrations. Given our recent article on geeky activism, this festival is a perfect fit for our events list.
Wednesday
  • Weird Al - The Alpocalypse Tour - Baltimore, MD - 7:00PM
    • The Apocalypse album had the great drama of the “Lady Gaga Saga.” Here’s the tldr: Lady Gaga’s manager jerked Al around for weeks before refusing permission for “Perform This Way” - so Al put it online for free and explained why it wouldn't make it onto the album. [Insert Huge Devoted Fanbase Outrage] Turns out the manager had never told Lady Gaga about any of it. The update merely says “He’s sorry.” Yeah, no kidding.
Thursday
  • Outdoor Movie Screenings - DC versus Marvel Comics - Canal Park, Washington, DC - 8:45PM
    • Every Thursday from now til mid-August, Canal Park will be screening Superhero movies, alternating between the DC and Marvel Universe in an outdoor movie battle royale. This week it's DC's turn with Green Lantern up on the big screen. It's free and open to the public at one of the District's newest parks.

Forget the laundry. Hang your shirt up after this 5k as modern art.

Friday
  • Gimmick Race - Run or Dye - Washington, DC - 9:00 AM
    • Color runs may not be very geeky or niche, but color runs look ridiculously fun. And so it’s exciting to have one in the district. Wear light colored clothing that you don’t mind being obliterated, and probably some sunglasses or goggles, maybe even a handkerchief to cover your mouth and nose. Wait, if online reviews are to be believed, basically you need to dress like you’re going to an #occupy event. Only here, guy Fawkes masks are optional.
    • Here’s the part you care about: “artwork by Jim Lee, Bruce Timm, Randy Martinez, Glen Orbik, and more. Some pieces are signed by Stan Lee... [and] never-before-seen works from Alex Ross--including an exclusive pre-release Batman painting.” Regardless of where you fall on the side of the divide, there will be amazing art and music, and costumes could earn you a prize. So throw on your best question-mark-covered green suit and head out.
Saturday
  • Release Party  Gaming in Public Washington, DC - 6:00PM
    • Join them at Public Bar in Tenley Town for the release of Cloudberry Kingdom, a cool platformer with randomly generated levels. Play on super easy, or crank it all the way up to 11, this customizable game has something for all skill levels in single or co-op awesomeness. The event proper begins at 6pm, and there's also an interview at 8pm with TJ Lutz, co-founder of Pwnee studios and creator of Cloudberry Kingdom. With free copies of the game to give away, this free-of-charge event is a must for any indie or platform game enthusiast.

Did we miss something? If you have an event you’d like to promote that isn’t on this list, leave a comment or email us. Other weekly recurring events are listed on our website (such as Rocky, CCG tournaments, crazy themed happy hours). For more information, check out the calendars at DC Geeks.

  1. Marvel vs. DC Show? Sounds interesting! Personally support Marvel because there are so many heroes I love are from Marvel. For DC, except for Green Arrow, Batman and Superman, I have no interest in all other heroes! And for some Japan style anime heroes, I love Eren and Kirito very much, all of them are fight alone to protect their world, and that why I cosplay (costumes are from cosplayfield.com) them in the exhibition!
