A showcase of this week's finest geek and geek related activities for the week. Mark your calendars.
Thank you, AwesomeCon and Penelope Gaylord for "Adventure Time with Fionna & Cake” |
Longer Term
Choose your own adventure! For ANIME, read point one. For COMICS, read point two. For PIRATES, read point three.
- Comics - Awesome Con - Washington, DC - Saturday and Sunday
- This is a Comic Con, but the goal of AwesomeCon is to embrace all aspects of geekdom and pop culture. So if you chose point two, you’re in for even more awesomeness than you may have expected. There’ll be awesome guests, awesome artists, and even awesome stuff for the kids. Remember, Dr. Sketchy’s DC will be there! So make sure to go get your burlesque-y, wonderful anti-art on.
- Anime - T-MODE - Rockville, MD - Friday through Sunday
- T-MODE is a smaller con, but definitely working its way up into the list of staple anime events for the area. The guest list includes tons of musicians, more DJs than you can wave a chiptune at. The merch list is pretty impressive as well. There’s an open Intervention Meetup for those of you who want to say hi to Oni and remind her how much you loved Intervention last year. Overall, it should be many funtimes for the otaku crowd.
- Arrrrr - Fell’s Point Privateer Festival - Baltimore, MD - Friday, Saturday, and Sunday
- There’s piratey events all weekend to honor the maritime history of Fell’s Point. If you have to pick just two, go for the ball and the pub crawl. The Pyrate’s Ball is most notable for the $20 bottomless mug that you can buy with presale. That sounds like a challenge. The Pyrate Invasion Pub Crawl makes twenty stops. TWENTY! So if you’re tired of “pub crawls” that wind up with your friends abandoning you into a cab after two locations, this is a dream come true. Make friends for life that you’ll never remember in the morning.
Wednesday
- Happy Hour - Geek Night Out at Carving Room - Washington, DC - 5:30PM
- Everyone likes a mid-week happy hour but here’s the best part, “House cured. Hand carved.” What carnivore doesn’t love hearing that?? Drinks, meat, and geeks sound like a good time. Please keep in mind that their “attendance policy is in effect,” so sign up on their Meetup and RSVP so they know how much space they’ll need.
Teachers and students, this Friday is the Day of Silence (promotional image by GLSEN) |
Friday
- Activism - GLSEN Day of Silence - Global - All Day
- We have some younger DCG readers, and although this isn’t a geek-specific issue, it’s too important to, well, stay silent about. The Day of Silence is a way for students to promote awareness about LGBT bullying and harassment in schools. Endorsers include other organizations like the Trevor Project, but the premise is simple: Taking a vow of silence for one day to raise awareness. This page has Tips for the Last-Minute Organizer.
Sunday
- Kevin Smith - Jay & Silent Bob's Super Groovy Cartoon Movie - Washington, DC - 8:00PM
- You know how you have a special section of your movie shelf where you break organization to separate the Jersey Trilogy? Wait, Wikipedia calls it the “View Askewniverse,” seriously? Regardless, here’s one you don’t have nestled safely next to Chasing Amy. The movie tour starts on 4/20 (durr hurr) and we’re getting it the next day. Check Smith’s blog post and then watch the NSFW trailer. As the trailer describes, it’s “the worst thing to happen to comic book movies since Ryan Reynolds’ Green Lantern.”
Did we miss something? If you have an event you’d like to promote that isn’t on this list, leave a comment or email us. Other weekly recurring events are listed on our website (such as Rocky, CCG tournaments, crazy themed happy hours). For more information, check out the calendars at DC Geeks.
