This Week in Geek: Top Hats and Darjeeling

A showcase of this week's finest geek and geek related activities for the week. Mark your calendars.
No goggles, no corset, no service: MarsCon
always has a strong Steampunk contingent.

Weekend-long

  • Convention - MarsCon - Williamsburg, VA - Friday through Sunday
    • You survived the attempted apocalypse, and now it’s time to start again. Then MarsCon has your back. One of the DC Geek staff’s favorite mid-sized gatherings, the Williamsburg con has moved to a new hotel this year. They’re using that new space to good effect too: bigger art room, more live music and stage acts, and more programming than ever. You’ve still got time, and you won’t even need a coat this weekend. (And Jonah Knight’s performing!)
  • Theater - Avenue Q - Arlington, VA - Thursday, Friday and Saturday (this week and next)
    • What do puppets, disaffected youth, and catchy/filthy songs have to do with geeks? The musical that taught us all what the internet is really for is back in town, so grab your tickets, grab a consenting friend, and head out for some fun. And since it's already stuck in your head, here's the link to the WoW version of the song. Wait, the video is seven years old?! Yikes.
Wednesday
  • Gaming - AARGGH at Teaism - Alexandria, VA - 6:30PM
    • The AARGGH has your mid-week gaming break covered this time around. Teaism is worthy of the trek all on its own even without the addition of a geeky gathering for gaming. Whether you come for the Ceylon or Catan, the event promises to be a great way to relax before knocking out those last two workdays. Remember to RSVP through the Meetup link so the organizers can get an accurate headcount.
Friday
  • Burlesque - Swami YoMahmi presents Dr. Who Burlesque - Washington, DC - 8:30PM and 11:00PM
    • The beloved Palace may be gone, but the amazing performers are still here, lurking in shadows and springing onstage when you most need them. Like this week, when the realization hits you that it’ll be a long, long stretch till the next holiday in May. You may have missed the Swami’s last Dr. Who show, but there’s no excuse to miss it this time. A burlesque tour of the Dr. Who universe and between-act entertainments will keep you enthralled.

I don't know something about Steampunk, sir.
I know everything about Steampunk.

Saturday
  • Crafting - Leather Top Hat Workshop - [location shown to members] - 12:00PM
    • The DC Steampunk group is hosting a workshop for making top hats! The reason to go is straight up mathematical: You can do what I did and drop $100 on a hat, or RSVP on meetup and spend $35 on the materials for this workshop. You know what they say, "Give a man a top hat and he’ll steampunk for the con, teach a man to make top hats and he’ll steampunk for life."
  • Vaudeville - Tilted Torch's Vaudeball - Washington, DC - 9:00PM, 10:00PM, and 11:00PM
    • And much as we try to avoid it here at DC Geeks, politics is the lifeblood of our region. Sometimes we can even embrace it in our own unique way, such as designating a Secretary of Pasties. Tilted Torch is providing us all the shelter of variety, dance, and side show for the inauguration. Its certainly a much more entertaining way to fulfill your civic duties than dropping $2500 to stand in the cold and look at the back of your fellow citizens’ heads.

Did we miss something? If you have an event you’d like to promote that isn’t on this list, leave a comment or email us. Other weekly recurring events are listed on our website (such as Rocky, CCG tournaments, crazy themed happy hours). For more information, check out the calendars at DC Geeks.
