This Week in Geek: Physics and Muggles

A showcase of this week's finest geek and geek related activities for the week. Mark your calendars.

Alternacirque! So good MabJustMab is heading down for it. I'd
go on that recommendation alone. (image from Alternacirque's FB)
Weekend
  • Doom? - Alternacirque's Festival of DOOM - Columbia, SC - Wed through Sat
    • Yes, we know South Carolina is a ways away. However, with all the variety/burlesque/circus fans we have in this area, I'd be remiss not to include it. Browse their site (or YouTube or Twitter or Facebook) if you think I'm exaggerating. They've just posted saying there are only a dozen tickets left for Friday's shows, so hop on it!
Today!
  • Wizarding - Muggle Mondays at Black Cat - Washington, DC - 8:00PM
    • So now, in addition to being able to watch Dr. Who and Buffy, the Black Cat is offering one night a week to the HP fandom. By the way, this week's DW is Fear Her and the BtVS is Forever. They're showing Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (RIP Richard Harris), but they also have Butterbeer drink specials. Omnomnom.
Wednesday
It is ON! (image by John Goetzinger
  • Gaming - DCGN is Not a Crook - Washington, DC - 6:00PM
    • Books aren't your thing? DC Game Night has your back. I've started wondering if they aren't a sort of fight club for German-style board games. Random places, random dates, show up, give your name as "Robert Paulson" and then Carcassonne harder than you have ever Carcassonned before! (It's a theory, it's probably wrong.)
Saturday
  • Gaming - Dejobaan Games, IGDA, & Gaming in Public - Washington, DC - 5:00PM
    • Despite my Meetup addiction, this event comes courtesy of Capital Games. Dejobaan games is offering the participants the chance to be one of the few, the lucky, and the first to try out Drunken Robot Pornography. The alpha is already on Steam, but I believe the gist is "You are squishy. Robots are not. Make them dead." The sneak peak was released at PAX last year: check out the trailer.
  • Nerd - Nerd Nite DC - Washington, DC - 6:00PM
    • Here's the quick run-down on the presentations: a developmental biologist explains balls, an architectural historian discusses non-Frank architects, and a theoretical particle physicist brings you up to speed on the Higgs. (I can now cross "Make an LHC pun." off my bucket list). Go forth and get knowledge'd!

Did we miss something? If you have an event you’d like to promote that isn’t on this list, leave a comment or email us. Other weekly recurring events are listed on our website (such as Rocky, CCG tournaments, crazy themed happy hours). For more information, check out the calendars at DC Geeks.
