A showcase of this week's finest geek and geek related activities for the week. Mark your calendars.
Relive your glory days, but with BEER! (image by °Florian) |
- Trivia - Rock Bottom Brewery Trivia Night - Bethesda, MD - 7:00PM
- Now, we have a lot of trivia on our recurring events. However, I happened to notice that two of the largest meetup groups have chosen the same location and time to throw down. This week’s trivia bout! Geek Night Out vs. DC Metro Redditors! Choose your side wisely. At this moment, the Redditors are outnumbered nearly 2:1. Will you cast your lot with the underdog? Either way, you have two days to stretch out the ole buzzer hand and whip through your trivial pursuit cards for practice. May the best nerds win.
- MST3K - RiffTrax Live at AMC - Alexandria, VA - 7:30PM
- If the movie Plan Nine from Outer Space is unfamiliar to you, we’ll understand. However, you should recognize RiffTrax from the brilliant minds that brought you MST3K. Now is your last chance to bask in the nostalgia as they tear apart a truly awful movie. AMC in Alexandria is hosting the event, and more locations can be found through the Fathom Events page.
- Burlesque - GiGi Holliday Presents: Zou Zou Revue - Washington, DC - 8:30PM and 11:30PM
- Remember our podcast with GiGi? She’s producing an awesome show this week at Black Cat. I’m still excited about the Black Cat providing a venue for local performers, so I’m going to keep plugging them on our events lists until you all tell me you’re sick of them. (Whoo, all that power tripping gave me a head rush). This event is 21+ only, sorry kids.
- Memorial - Aaron Swartz Memorial Hackathon - Washington, DC - 11:00AM to 11:00PM
- Many of us are still reeling from news of Aaron Swartz’s suicide earlier this month. The news has been covering his brilliance and activism, and it’s tragic that it took his death for mainstream media to recognize the absurdity of the charges against him. The petition to oust overzealous DA Carmen Ortiz is still open, and I’d recommend donating to EFF, but if you’d prefer to do something more HacDC is hosting an all-day hackathon (membership may be required, ask for details on their meetup).

- Derby - DC Rollergirls Bout at the Armory - Washington, DC - 4:00PM and 5:45PM
- If the trivia throwdown earlier isn’t quite enough, then head out to the Armory to watch DC Demoncats vs. Majority Whips followed by Scare Force One vs. Cherry Blossom Bombshells. The announcers are great, there’s all the PBR your little hipster fists can hold, and fun vendors surrounding the action. If you need to get your weekly dose of legal ultraviolence, there are few places better than the Armory on a Saturday afternoon.
- Show - Charles Ross’ One Man Star Wars Trilogy - Alexandria, VA - 7:30PM
- From the man who brought you a one man performance of the Lord of the Rings comes this season’s retelling of the Star Wars trilogy. Charles is high speed, high energy, and somehow manages the distinctive voices of all the characters as he makes his way through all three movies in an hour. I’m not sure if its more Cliff Notes with a snarky writer or that amazingly drunk friend at a party who won’t stop, but either way his shows are amazingly entertaining.
- Gaming - Android Netrunner at Labyrinth - Washington, DC - 11:00AM to 6:00PM
- Need a cyberpunk game that isn’t titled Cyberpunk? Check out the Android Netrunner free demos going on this weekend at Labyrinth (RSVP by email). Keeping with this week’s “choose your side” theme, you can play as either the overwhelming global corporation or the plucky hackers attempting to dodge their security measures. Sounds like a great mix between traditional settings and tropes and Fantasy Flight’s asymmetrical CCG.
Did we miss something? If you have an event you’d like to promote that isn’t on this list, leave a comment or email us. Other weekly recurring events are listed on our website (such as Rocky, CCG tournaments, crazy themed happy hours). For more information, check out the calendars at DC Geeks.
