This Week in Geek - 2012/12/03

A showcase of this week's finest geek and geek related activities for the week. Mark your calendars.

Longer Term

  • Performance - Seussical - Washington DC - Through 01/06/2013
    • Perhaps its not exclusively geek, but meta-humor and meta-story tend to be strong currents in a lot of our entertainment, and its just that kind of audience awareness that sealed the deal for me with Seussical. When its the Cat in the Hat narrating other characters from the good doctor, things have gotten twisty enough to catch my attention. The musical is running through January, but many of the DC Geeks crowd are planning to go December 8th show.

Wednesday
  • Comics - Marvel Now! Avengers #1 Release Party - Fairfax, VA - 10:30 AM
    • Laughing Ogre Comics in Fairfax is excited about the new line release, and are using the promise of sugar and company to whip up your excitement too. While they’ll be in a celebratory mood all day, there will be cake at points to boost that even higher. The party organizers are also calling out for all cosplayers to show up around 6:00 PM that night to impress the locals and enjoy the crowd.
The holiday you'll never see coming.

  • Holiday - Day of the Ninja - Anywhere - Any time
    • You thought the pirates had the holiday market cornered with Talk Like a Pirate Day? Only for the uninitiated. December 5th is here though, and its the one day a year for the ninja to reveal themselves, to remind the community that no matter when, no matter where, the shadows can find you.
  • Holiday - 1st Annual Krampuslauf DC - Washington, DC - 7:00 PM
    • This event makes me weep that I’ll be unavailable, sitting as it does at the intersection of cosplay, folklore, and alcohol. For those of you unfamiliar with Krampus, and up for a slightly NSFW education, I give you a brief informative video. Go on. I’ll wait. Now then, get your Krampus on, and gather with your fellow demons in DC. Who knows? If this gets going, maybe we’ll be able to snowball into some mummers for the area.
Thursday
  • Games - DCGN Sick of Talking About Elections - Washington DC - 6:00 PM
    • Politics. Its the official sport of the DC Metro region. And let’s be honest, who doesn’t enjoy watching the cage matches democratic process? But even we get enough, and the DCGN is brave enough to voice that feeling. So had enough, but miss the company of your fellow gamers and geeks? Then head out this week to their next games night, and bring your favorite games to share with your compatriots in fun.

Saturday

  • Derby! - DC Rollergirls Cherry Blossom Bombshells vs. Majority Whips - Washington DC - 4:00 PM
    • It’s that magical time of year again. The weather turns cool, the decorations go up, and ladies from around the District show off their might in the derby ring. If you didn’t get to go out to last season, you owe it to yourself to glance at our first look at the sport. Then, head out to watch for yourself. There’s usually a few geeky meetup groups attending, and I’ve yet to hear of anyone who didn’t have a good time.
  • Con - Tigercon - Towson, MD - 10:00 AM until late
    • Tigercon is something of a rarity for our area: its an anime con that packs everything into a single day and asks you for no money nor blood, but just to come and have a good time. The con is hosting live music, anime screenings and events, a cosplay contest, and an array of panels on topics ranging from industry news to costume help to speculative science discussions.Get back to your roots, get to meet locals who share your obsession, and do it for free at Tigercon.

Did we miss something? If you have an event you’d like to promote that isn’t on this list, leave a comment or email us. Other weekly recurring events are listed on our website (such as Rocky, CCG tournaments, crazy themed happy hours). For more information, check out the calendars at DC Geeks.
