Longer Term
- Cons - Anime Weekend Atlanta - Atlanta, GA - September 28 through September 30
- Why Atlanta? I’ll give you a few reasons. 1) its your last chance to embrace Summer before what I’m betting will be a cool Fall and bitter Winter; 2) cons that grow from tiny events to huge ones in a controlled and steady manner tend to be awesome; 3) it looks like the best thing on the East Coast for anime fans this weekend. The con will be serving up a heaping serving of talent from the manga and anime worlds with artists, writers, actors, and more programming than you could cover in a weekend. Let me reframe this for you: the con’s activities have gotten so big that they are sprawling across three hotels this year. So a roadtrip weekend with a chewy con center? Sounds like the perfect way to say good-bye to the Summer.

Oh, sure, its a cute project showing off current robotics until you stop paying attention and it wanders into the Arduino Tent... Image by SparkFunElectronics |
- Cons - World Makers’ Faire - New York City - September 29th & 30th
- Alright folks, you’ve got five more days to prepare for the biggest collection of makers and their crafts on the East Coast. A gathering of more than five hundred maker displays, specality theme areas (like the Arduino Tent and the 3D Printing Village), supplies (kit sales and the Maker’s Shed is even setting up a storefront), and the glorious, glorious programming. I love that most of all, since the programs are ranging from what you’d expect (kit bashing for fun and thrills) to the wider in scope (such as disrupting traditional education through barter and a mentor system). Yeah, its in Queens, but take the train, take your gear, and if you have a single impulse in you to build, go!
- Festivals - Fall For the Book - All around the DC region - September 26 through September 30
- Now, a large and well funded book festival is enough to get me interested, though not specifically geeky in the way the term is most often used these days. After all, more than just geeks like books, and I know many a geek who really doesn’t read more than their WH40K codexes. But this one is justified: Mr. Neil Gaiman will be back in town, for just one night. He’s receiving this year’s Mason award, and while the one on one reception with the man is sold out, there are still seats available for the award ceremony itself. I’d hurry, though.

Costs next to nothing, uses globally available technology, and is open source? Time to change things. Image by jared_smith |
Wednesday
- Tech - Raspberry Pi Roadshow - Washingont, DC - 7:30PM
- The good folks over at HacDC are throwing open their doors for a night, to any and all comers. Or at least to those with an interest in tiny computers, cheap computers, and how technology can change a child’s life. The Raspberry Pi idea is a very neat one, and one I’m glad to see got off the ground. Now its time to really make it take off. Ready to get your feet wet?
- Burlesque - Everyday is Halloween: A Pre-Halloween Halloween Show - Washington, DC - 8:30PM
- Its that time of year again; the time when our local performers of the peculiar start focusing in on many a geek’s favorite holiday: Halloween. Honestly, the longer I attend cons with my DC Geeks hat on (instead of the usual fan hat), the stronger the correlation I see: cons are just HAlloween when we want it. Or maybe Halloween is the one season that we turn the whole world into our con. Either way, the Red Palace seems to be learning the local geek population at a delightful rate, and they’ve got another offering for us.
Did we miss something? If you have an event you’d like to promote that isn’t on this list, leave a comment or email us. Other weekly recurring events are listed on our website (such as Rocky, CCG tournaments, crazy themed happy hours). For more information, check out the calendars at DC Geeks.
