This Week in Geek 2012/09/17

A showcase of this week's finest geek and geek related activities for the week. Mark your calendars.

Longer Term

  • Convention - Intervention - Rockville, MD - Friday through Sunday
    • I'm really excited about this con, and not just because my RSS has been full of all my favorite webcomic artists plugging the event. Internet + Convention = Intervention, which is perfect because everything I love at cons I found on the internets. It has nothing to do with talking Uncle Billy into getting help, I don't care if you do shots of Liquid Plumbr, just show up to the con. And because Idaho had to rally at the end of the first half and blow my spread by one damn point, I may be there with a GoPro strapped to a top hat.
With awesome guests like Jennie Breeden (the artist behind
The Devil's Panties, and whose image I'm borrowing)
how could you miss Intervention?

Wednesday
  • Pirates - Talk Like a Pirate Day - Everywh'aarrr - All day
    • Ok, I won't attempt to write this in pirate speak because, thankfully, I have a few days to get my embarrassingly bad pirate impression in order. Brush up on your "Argh" and "Matey" and prepare to confuse a few mundanes on Wednesday. Of course you already knew about TLaPD and you were already planning to visit Piratz Tavern, right? If you weren't, let me remind you that it's Wench Wednesday.
Saturday
  • DIY - Pittsburgh Mini-Makers Faire - Pittsburgh, PA - 10:00AM to 4:00PM
    • Since there aren't many East Coast events for Makers Faire, I tend to list all of them, even if they're a bit of a hike. For $13, you can access demos, workshops, presentations, and more throughout the day. They have the list of 2012 Makers posted on the website. Obviously, the deadline for submissions has passed, but the call for makers video below gives a good idea what the event is like:

  • Meetup - Hacking the Gender Gap - Washington, DC - 2:00PM
    • Did you know: "In 2005, 22% of computer science graduates were women. This is down from 37% in 1985." This week, HacDC is hosting a get-together to discuss why there's this ever-widening gap. Beyond just computer science, they're looking to discuss the gender gap in maker/hackerspaces. With 25 attendees already signed up, it looks like the topic resonates with a lot of people. The event is free, and open to everyone (all genders/identities).
  • Derby - DC Rollergirls Bouts - Washington, DC - 4:00PM and 5:45PM
    • And that is a pretty good transition to talking about one of my favorite groups of seriously badass women: derby girls. This weekend, the DC Armory hosts the DC All-Stars vs. the Berlin Bombshells for an epic international throwdown followed by a fun bout of DC-on-DC action. Great event to kick back, grab a beer, and watch some excellent violence athleticism... badassery.

Did we miss something? If you have an event you’d like to promote that isn’t on this list, leave a comment or email us. Other weekly recurring events are listed on our website (such as Rocky, CCG tournaments, crazy themed happy hours). For more information, check out the calendars at DC Geeks.
