This Week in Geek 2012/08/13

A showcase of this week's finest geek and geek related activities for the week. Mark your calendars.

Now just relax and we'll take care of those unfortunate thoughts, DC.

Longer Term

  • Movies - A Clockwork Orange - Silver Spring, MD - Thursday through Saturday
    • AFI gets linked here fairly often, but there’s a reason for that: they give me an excuse to dress up in white, dust off my walking stick, steal my friend’s super-thick mascara, and sink down into my first exposures into dystopianism. I’m not advocating that you head out looking to indulge in a bit of ultraviolence, but I am advocating showing up in full cosplay this week.
  • Beer - DC Beer Week - Breweries all over DC - All week
    • Yes, DC has always have that kind of scotch for breakfast and gin for lunch atmosphere, even amongst the geeks. Well, at least where I’ve worked, Secret Tequila has been a common part of the workday. But times change, and the beer culture has been exploding in DC the last couple of years. This is the week to embrace it through special events, savor it with friends, perhaps even let it start to work into the “I could do that!” center of the brain that most every geek seems to have.
Monday
  • HP - Harry & The Potters with Potter Puppet Pals - Washington, DC - 7:00 PM
    • So you have your house colors on and your scarf wrapped up tight, even though its August. And sure, you play Quidditch every other week. You even have a broom that you’ve lovingly restored and polish before bed. But you haven’t seen this: the meeting of Harry Potter rock and Harry Potter puppets together on tour. The results promise to be nothing short of mind melting.
Tuesday
  • Beer - Chouffe Little Man Big Mouth Taco Takedown - Washington, DC - 10:00PM
    • Alright, I get that this isn’t stereotypically geeky. So indulge me. Its in a bar that’s got a setting I would kill for (or at least rent for a weekend long Dogs in the Vineyard LARP). Its got tasty beer. And its got tacos. Tacos you must eat faster than a gnome. With the chance of winning more tacos. Email early if you want to compete.

My friends are back!

Thursday
  • Movies - Rifftrax Live - Multiple Theaters - 8:00PM
    • Hopefully we all remember Mystery Science Theater 3000. Hopefully we all remember snarking right along with them. It was like having three more friends to watch the movie with, only you didn’t have to feed them. And then they went away. It was traumatic. But now they’re back for the night, and not just for any movie, oh no. They’re back for “Manos” The Hands of Fate, arguably the worst movie of all time. I, personally, anticipate as much audience participation as a Rocky Horror showing for this one. Get out there and make us proud.
Friday
  • Games - Game Night at the Goethe Institute - Washington, DC - 5:00PM
    • Folks into the board game scene get that there are style differences between North American games and European ones. I even see “European-style” used as an adjective in game descriptions these days. Well, why not embrace it? The good folks at Labyrinth are getting together with the Goethe Institute for a night of Settlers and more. If you’re in the District just head on over. I haven’t visited the Institute in years, but they were always good folks.
Saturday
  • Movie Cult - Rocky Horror Shadowcast - Fairfax, VA - 11:59PM
    • Are there any virgins left out there? Or at least any that read DCG? Maybe... stranger things have happened. Virgin or longtime Rocky Horror slut, the weekly shadowcast at University Mall Cinema is still going strong. And why is a recurring event on the listing this week? Its Trashy Lingerie Night at the shadowcast! It tempts me to dust off the wheelchair and break out the fishnets.

Did we miss something? If you have an event you’d like to promote that isn’t on this list, leave a comment or email us. Other weekly reoccurring events are listed on our website (such as Rocky, CCG tournaments, crazy themed happy hours). For more information, check out the calendars at DC Geeks.
