Sabre looks fierce with that sword, but her preferred battleground is Unreal Tournament. (photo by Jonathan Luna) |
Sabre is one of the stunning Frag Dolls, a group of female professional gamers recruited by Ubisoft (who, in addition to being badasses, all look like they could easily switch to modeling careers). And Sabre was ok with going right in and tackling the big sexist elephant in the room as we all got to rant about our "favorite" examples of rampant misogyny. She also let us in on what it's like to work a huge industry event like E3, and how that differs from fan-filled cons like PAX.
The super secret surprise that Sabre's been keeping quiet since the video aired? She and the Frag Dolls (including the current cadettes) put the whole thing together, filming it in one day! The reason that the video is under the name of HawkandGamble is that the project was so secret, it was done under the radar by a collection of individuals who happen to also be Frag Dolls, rather than being an official video of Ubisoft. If you want more YouTube FragDoll badassery, check out their collaboration with Rooster Teeth from PAX 2010.
Sabre's secret identity is Kim Weigend, daughter of the owners of Game Parlor. It goes without saying, she's familiar with everything from a Magic Missile to a Hadouken to an M-920 Cain. We asked what she was playing now, which transitioned into talking about Powerup Heroes (which I thought sounded like a game where you just have a fight and let the Kinect keep score). And that brought up a discussion of one of our favorite YouTube videos of all time:

Girls, if you're interested in trying out, keep an eye on the Cadette Academy page. They'll be accepting applications for the 2013 class starting in January. That just means you have a few months to hone your image, test out that webcam, touch up your social media sites, articulate the reasons you want to join, watch the current crop of Cadettes, and beef up that Gamerscore. The Cadettes are already putting up photos, blogs, and videos.
