This Week In Geek 2011/05/16

Longer Term
  • Conventions - Steampunk World's Fair - Somerset, NJ - Friday through Sunday
    • Now, I know several people that really intended to make it up to NJ for this one.  Somehow forest fires and zombies appear to be keeping them away.  It's what it sounds like, mad science combined with pseudo Victorian garb.  For me it's more about the mad science.  BAM!  You're a frog now.  That's how we roll.
  • Geekish General - MAPS Meet 2011 - Conowingo,Maryland - Thursday through Sunday
    • Now MAPS is an different sort of outdoorsy event than we normally have showcased.  It's essentially a primitive skills education / training gathering.  Yes, at first not amazingly exciting.  Then the more people talked to me about it things started coming up.  Like, "you can learn to track people in the woods", "you can learn to make weapons", "you can learn to forage for food".  The more I thought about it, the more I realized.  This is training for the apocalypse(pick your own, I'm going with zombie.  Just seems more romantic).  So when some people know how to make arrowheads and craft body armor against the hordes of the undead, you'll know where they picked up those particular skills(should there be a Mad Max reference here?).
  • Art - "Peep" Show - Arlington, VA - All Week
    • zOMG.  Peeps, as in the marshmallow bird type things that so many people love torturing in experiments (Frankenpeep?) in a showcase.  This is going on for longer than just this week.  Covering it because we haven't before.  And no, we checked, there is no eating the art work.  We are also still waiting to hear back if they are planning a Cadbury Cream Egg show.  Although that's harder to add innuendo to.
  • Gaming - SimTerra LARP - Manassas, VA - Saturday to Sunday
    • Post apocalyptic LARP. Hey, this is evidently where the Mad Max reference was meant to go. Bonus points if you manage to set up your own thunderdome. Triple bonus points if you get Tina Turner to MC for you.
Saturday
  • Holidays - International Museum Day
    • A lot of the local museums are having cheaper fares or special rates for this event. It's usually a pretty big deal within the.. museum community.  Ok, I tried to say that without giggling and failed.  Really, a lot of us love the hell out of museums, so this is a better excuse than most to check out some of the crazy DC museums that you might not have seen before.  Here's a pretty interesting list of crime museum stuff.
  • Geekish General - DC101's Chili Cook-Off - Washington, DC
    • HOLY CRAP TASTY CHILI. This is probably one of the key events this weekend that I'm amazingly sad that I'm not going to be able to make it out to. Live music and all sorts of interesting chili. Let us know how it goes and what your favorites were. If you could save some for me in a cup(make sure you cover and refrigerate that shit).
  • Geekish General - Warrior Dash MDMechanicsville, MD - 8 am
    • There are two warrior dashes in the DC Metro, this one and then another in the late summer.  We may have an article coming out reviewing the one in VA.  Regardless, this is an opportunity to use that Conan costume that's been sitting in your closet for the last 3 years.  Oh and go outside and get some exercise.  Watch out for the fire traps though.  That's how they get you.
  • Festivals - National Asian Heritage Festival: Fiesta Asia - Washington, DC - 10 am
    • Martial arts demonstrations, all sorts of Chinese and Japanese fanfare.  Some actual educational value out of it as well.  I know it's sad for us to be promoting actually learning something that's not about Jawas or Cylons.  The food will be absolutely amazing.  I've been to this before.  Go with an empty stomach.
  • Gaming - May Grand Gaming Melee and Potluck (AARRGGH)Arlington, VA - 12 am
    • Monthly board gaming extravaganza.  I love that this gaming group is called AARRGGH.  Especially since the H doesn't actually stand for anything.  This normally gets a pretty large turn out with a large variety of games.  The folks running it are fantastic as well.
An exciting week! Get to it! Other weekly reoccurring events are listed on our website (such as Rocky, CCG tournaments, crazy themed happy hours...).

  1. A great list of fun things to look forward too, but it would be helpful if you provided links. I'm lazy and don't want to Google each of these things myself. But "MAPS" looks worthy of a google.
