A showcase of this week's finest geek and geek related activities for the week. Mark your calendars.
Don't be fooled by the ethereal beauty, the women throw a excellent concert. (promotional image from The Mediaeval Baebes' site) |
Tuesday
- Music - Mediaeval Baebes - Alexandria, VA - 7:30PM
- Did you miss the musical guests at their special appearance at Maryland's Renaissance Festival? Well, you're in luck because the Mediaeval Baebes are hitting the Birchmere as well. Combining beauty, archaic instruments, and gorgeous voices, the concert is definitely a great way to cheer up an early weeknight.
- Geek Music - Wil Wheaton VS Paul & Storm - Alexandria, VA - 7:30PM
- Although Paul & Storm may be from around here and stop by the Birchmere on a yearly basis or so, a new challenger approaches. Wil Wheaton is invading from the West Coast to... well, do something because there's frickin' laser beams on the posters. Oh, and sorry if you just got your hopes up, because this show is hella sold out. Maybe you can keep an eye to Twitter or Stubhub if you're left out in the geekless cold.
- FutureTense - Future of Longevity - Washington, DC - 9:00AM to 12:30PM
- People are living longer! Yay! Or wait, maybe not. NPR has a somewhat eerie video titled, "Filling Up" that just about makes you hear a clock ticking distantly in the background of, um, everything. However, the talks this week are focused on how we are rapidly approaching the point where lifespans of a century or more may become commonplace. How drastically will this affect society? Marriages? Jobs? Listen to experts theorize on the non-medical impact that these fascinating medical advances may have on us all.
Searched for "Biology" on Creative Commons. Vince42 did not disappoint! |
Saturday
- Derby - DC Rollergirls Season Opens! - Washington, DC - Doors open at 3:00PM
- Business first, for you fans who've already been to a bout, you've filled out the fan survey, right? Hop on it if you haven't. Data, data, data, they cannot make bricks without clay. Now we can get back to the amazing match ups of the seaons open! The first bout is Scare Force One vs. Majority Whips. The second is DC Demoncats (How much do you love their mascot?) vs. Cherry Blossom Bombshells. Tear it up, women. Best of luck to everyone.
- 5k Run / Afterparty - Run for Your Lives - Charlotte Hall, MD - All Day
- So, your cries for change have been heard. The race is in a new location: Wicomico Motorsports Park. The date has been pushed earlier in the year so you aren't goddamned hypodermic by the end, finishing in the dark. You can still register online as a runner, but sadly not a zombie. However, unlike the first and second years, there's not some exorbitant price to watch. Remember how we recommended bringing a friend to watch your gear so you're not spending 4 hours soaking wet and out in the cold before you can get to bag claim and your towel? That guy now gets in for free. So you should pay for what would have been his admissions fee in beer - be a bro.
- Small Con - Capicons - Dunn Loring, VA - 10:00AM to 3:00PM
- Before you balk at the idea of an afternoon-long "con," please note that admission is $3 and kids get in for free. This sounds less like a convention in the "party for three days in a hotel full of geeks" sense and more like a massive collector swap meet. This is a great chance to buy, sell, and trade comics of all ages and publishers: gold, silver, bronze, indie, modern, etc. Same goes for figurines, DVDs, and other memorabilia. There's more information on their Facebook event. It sounds like an event that no avid collector should miss.
