Longer Term
- Convention - Small Press Expo - Bethesda, MD - Saturday and Sunday
- For a great overview, check out John Donnell’s review of last year’s event. This event embodies a quote from Amanda Palmer’s Ted talk, “For most of human history, musicians, artists, they’ve been part of the community, connectors and openers, not untouchable stars.” Too often, fandom is about multi-hour lines waiting to spend $5 (or $30) on a signature from someone who never even looks at you. This is your chance to really meet and see and interact with creators in a way that almost no other event makes possible. Oh, and of course, don’t forget money for comics.
- Convention - Anime USA - Washington, DC - Friday through Sunday
- Plan on metroing in. The advice is twofold: Don’t spend half a tank of gas looking for tiny parallel parking in front of townhouses, and plan on going. There’s the usual guest list as long as my arm, and you can’t forget the formal ball, but as always the maid cafe and host club really go above and beyond to set this con apart. (And now they have a video library up!)
Wednesday
- Happy Hour - DC Geeks Happy Hour - Washington, DC - 7:30pm
- Our monthly happy hour is upon us once again! Join us at Atlas Arcade for the Best of the Internet™. After spending some time digging into the depths of the internet for the coolest things we've stumbled upon the past several months, we're excited to share them with you.
- Burlesque - Gilded Lily Honors Dixie Evans - Baltimore, MD - 9:00PM
- You’re familiar with at least two members of Gilded Lily from our podcast. This Friday night, the entire troupe is coming together to celebrate the life of Dixie Evans who passed away last week. She was the “Marilyn Monroe” and “beloved godmother” of burlesque. As part of a global effort, all funds raised during the show will help cover her outstanding medical bills and funeral arrangements. The event is drawing performers from not only Maryland, DC, and Virginia, but even as far away as Pennsylvania for an undoubtedly must-see event.

- Derby - Beltway Betties vs Vineyard Vixens - Dulles, VA - 4:30PM
- Join the Virginia roller derby teams for their bout this weekend. The face off is a rematch between last season’s champions and so everyone’s got a lot to prove. The site notes that the best seats are the ones you bring yourself, so grab a folding or lawn chair before you head to the Sportsplex. Should be an absolute blast, and the girls are friendly enough that the afterparty information is already out on the website (Mahalo Cove).
- Lecture- Nerd Nite - Washington, DC - 6:30PM
- Nerd Nite at DC9 always has lecture topics for ever flavor of nerd, but this upcoming series really takes the cake. Fairytale survival, sexy smelling snakes, and polymathism all in one night? This one can't be missed. Tickets are $10 in advance & at the door.
Did we miss something? If you have an event you’d like to promote that isn’t on this list, leave a comment or email us. Other weekly recurring events are listed on our website (such as Rocky, CCG tournaments, crazy themed happy hours). For more information, check out the calendars at DC Geeks.
Also, don't forget the Burlesque event on Saturday at the Bier Baron in Dupont presented by GiGi Holliday, featuring cosplay cutie Maki Rolle!!!!! Only 10 bucks and doors open at 8:30 which is after Anime USA closes, so everyone should head over!!!!!!!! Thank you.
