A showcase of this week's finest geek and geek related activities for the week. Mark your calendars.
It exists!! I finally found it!!! MUAHAHAHAHA!!!1one!!1 I've been looking for this for nearly a decade. It embodies everything I think of when I envision running a con. Thank you, whoever runs the archive for Can't Sleep, Con Will Eat Me. |
Longer Term
- Instead of the How I Met Your Mother running joke that all men consider buying a bar at some point in their lives, geeks often get the idea “We should run a con!” And the staff of the brand new 1d4Con have done just that. What began as the 1d4 Podcast has grown into a full weekend event. Online registration is now closed but the whole weekend’s admission will only run you $25. Registration is available online for games as well. Show the new local con some love, and join up with their facebook group.
- This weekend, there are three events scheduled at Game Parlor to celebrate the Dragon's Maze release! The first is at midnight (Friday night, technically Saturday). The second is Saturday at noon, and the third is Sunday at noon. Evidently, the slots are going like crazy, so make sure you email Game Parlor to save your space if you want in.
Thursday
- You wanted more blu-ray-level high-definition Picard badassery? You got it. Fathom events is running another excellent night of Star Trek on the big screen. The episodes are the Season Three finale and Season Four premier, tied together seamlessly with newly created CGI (and their website promises “special clips from Regeneration: Engaging the Borg” - which should be the usual behind-the-scenes interviews that they usually include with these events). The last one I went to was packed so make sure to grab your tickets while you still can.
- The Evil League of Ecdysiasts (whom you may remember from our podcast) promised that they’d be back and they are making good on that! Please note that although the event will have the usual geek and sexy, it’s also helping a good cause, “Raffle proceeds will be donated to help offset medical expenses for the charming trickster, Epic Win Burlesque’s Nelson Lugo.” Head out on Thursday to Bier Baron Tavern to have a great night of burlesque and help out a performer.
I'm already humming "So They Say" because the ELE promises "The Weird Stuff." (image from ELE's Facebook Event) |
Friday
- It’s that time again! Great games from our friends at Area 42 and an awesome space from the NovaLabs Makers. Tinkering, making, gaming, we’re all geeks here and everyone loves a good boardgame throwdown. Sidenote/plug for them: Did you know that NovaLabs has an excellent blog of things that they’re tinkering away on in the shop (or hewing apart with lasers, you know, depends on their mood).
Saturday
- You know the drill - rollerskates and women that could put you in the ground. This week we have the National Maulers vs the Independence Dolls and the later bout is the DC All-Stars vs. the Philly Liberty Belles. Come show your support for the district as our All Stars skate laps around their Philadelphia contenders.
- MOAR Derby - NoVA Roller Derby - Washington, DC - 4:30PM
- Maybe you want derby but don’t have a thing against Philly. Then, NoVA has you covered as the local Skate Troopers face off against New Jersey’s Atlantic Coast Roller Girls. So you have a decision before you: Who do you really want to make sure faces the justice of the D/M/V region? Pennsylvania? Or New Goddamn Jersey? The choice is yours. (It’s all in the spirit of healthy local competition, right?)
Did we miss something? If you have an event you’d like to promote that isn’t on this list, leave a comment or email us. Other weekly recurring events are listed on our website (such as Rocky, CCG tournaments, crazy themed happy hours). For more information, check out the calendars at DC Geeks.
