Wednesday

    • Trivial pursuit? Amateurs. Quiz bowl? Pah! If you really want to science off against other, wait, how did they put it? Ah yes. If you want to “test your knowledge on landmark studies published by PNAS about genomics, the human microbiome, and other hot topics in science,” then it’s time to assemble a team of your most science-tastic friends, and enter the science thunderdome.

Friday

  • Board Games - NOVA Labs + Area 42 = Games - Reston, VA -  7:00PM
    • NOVA Labs is the non-profit makerspace over in Reston. They have some excellent recurring events for members. However, this week, they’ve teamed up with local game store / meetup group, Area 42 to host a game night! (Shameless link to our podcast with Area 42) There’s the meetup link above, and you can also join the event and RSVP on Area 42’s Facebook page. I love it when local groups collaborate on events like this.

Saturday

  • Board Games - International Tabletop Day - Washington, DC - 12:00PM
    • When Felicia Day and Wil Wheaton launched Geek & Sundry, I was such a fan that after a few DC Geeks podcasts we had to place a moratorium on me fangirling over it during our recordings. I love Tabletop. I can unabashedly admit that I own a number of games based on the series’ recommendation alone. I’m psyched for the event.

Know how you already [should] love Labyrinth? Labyrinth and their co-sponsor ThinkGeek are hosting demo teams from Steve Jackson Games and North Star Games, as well as local game designer Dave Chalker. I'm especially excited about Dave because his game Get Bit was one of the first games to be shown on an episode of Tabletop!
    • When you’ve finished a long, day of boardgames, what you really need to do is hop the metro from Eastern Market to U Street and close the evening on a drunken sing-a-long. That’s right. This week’s episode of Buffy is Once More, With Feeling. The soundtrack to this is what convinced me to stick with B:tVS through my doubts about season one straight through to permanent fandom. It’s why I knew Dr. Horrible would be amazing, and all of my trust in Joss’ work ties directly back to my love of this episode. If you only make one Hellmouth event, make this one.
  • Derby - DC Rollergirls Bouts - Washington, DC - 4:00PM and 5:45PM
    • Or,  if you duck out of game day a little early, you can hop the ridiculously short trip from Eastern Market to Stadium-Armory (I wish I loved the reality of WMATA as much as I like their trip planner page), and hit up the week’s roller derby. At 4:00, we have the DC Demoncats vs Scare Force One. The 5:45 bout is Majority Whips vs Cherry Blossom Bombshells, who I believe should get a 5% buff to accuracy due to the ongoing Cherry Blossom Festival. Come on, get that bit of the old ultra-violence.

Longer Term

  • Convention - Nippon Con - Westminster, MD - 10:00AM Saturday through 2:00AM Sunday

(design by Carlai Hayden)

    • I love small college conventions. And McDaniel College’s anime club is throwing one this weekend. They’ve done something smart - even though it’s only their second year, they already have sponsors or connections with vendors like MythicalFair, Crunchyroll, and others. If my eyes are to be believed, the con is five dollars if you pre-register, and you get all these cool discounts. Keep in mind, MythicalFair sells those brain-controlled cat ears. Hell, even if you don’t go to the con, just give the kids the $5 and immediately make $3.50 of it back on those freaking Necomimi ears! Of course, if you can make it, here’s their Facebook page if you’d like to RSVP.

Did we miss something? If you have an event you’d like to promote that isn’t on this list, leave a comment or email us. Other weekly recurring events are listed on our website (such as Rocky Horror, gaming tournaments, quiz bowls, and themed happy hours). For more information, check out the calendars at DC Geeks.
