A showcase of this week's finest geek and geek related activities for the week. Mark your calendars.
This was shared on Reddit and is now stuck in my head, so I’m sharing the abuse.
(All copyright owned by Monty Python but since they put everything up on YouTube,
I don't feel so much as a guilty twinge about sharing it here.)
Wednesday
- Surrealism - Monty Python and the Holy Grail at Drafthouse - Arlington, VA - 7:20PM
- I know some people who “don’t think Holy Grail lives up to the hype” but I don’t know anyone who out-and-out dislikes it. Even those people who are confused or frightened by the surrealism of Flying Circus or the oddity of Meaning of Life, they still manage to love the hell out of Holy Grail. For three bucks? Give yourself a Wednesday to look forward to. Just, please, for the rest of our sakes, just lip sync the movie instead of trying to audibly quote along.
Saturday
- Not-PAX - StreetPass DC: Who Needs PAX? - Washington, DC - 3:00PM to 5:00PM
- Aww, in between all the bitterness about PAX being sold out, and reminding everyone about the inevitable mutations of viruses that waft around the New England event, you can almost hear someone sniffling in disappointment. I can’t throw stones - I think a lot of people were waiting for the payment page to load when the event sold out from under their fingertips. But you know what Boston doesn’t have? The goddamn Smithsonian American Art Museum! Wait, don’t go! It gets nerdier: Make sure to bring your DS, maybe dust off Mario Kart or TWEWY because this event is going to be heavily Nintendo-focused. Now’s your chance to pick up those last few badges or try out multiplayer features!

- Nerdlesque - Twisted Knickers Presents: Sci-Fi Double Feature - Baltimore, MD - 8:00PM
- Showing a new (to me) venue some love: This event is going to be at the Yellow Sign Theater. I hype Black Cat events all the time, now I'd like to plug another location for the nerdy, the beautiful, and the burlesque. Slave Leia like you’ve never seen her before, well, Internet excluded, and so much more. If you’re on the Maryland end of our readership, head on up. Two words: Sexy Boba.
- DERBY!! - NOVA Roller Derby Season Starts! - Sterling, VA - 4:30PM
- So, for you Virginians who aren’t fond of treking into the district for your derby fix, I’ll save the scolding and get straight to the awesome news: This week, Northern Virginia’s derby season starts up! This Saturday, it’s the Backwoods Rollers vs the Beltway Betties, $12 at the door, but you may want to snag tickets in advance as it’s the kickoff bout. Throw on some ripped fishnets and cheer like it’s your favorite legal blood sport.
Sunday
- #heyladies - Ladies Night at Fantom Comics - Washington, DC - 6:00PM
- This is an exclusive, ladies-only, after-hours event at Fantom Comics, so make sure you RSVP on their Facebook to reserve your space now. Check out our podcast with Fantom's co-owner, Matt, and pick up some of their digital content from Comixology while you’re waiting for Sunday. If you’re mad about Comixology and Marvel’s recent fuck-ups (yes, I do get all my comics news from The Gutters), then skip down to Union Station and buy stuff in person - you don’t have to wait to fight your way in on Sunday night.
Longer Term
- Sold Out - PAX East - Boston, MA - Friday through Sunday
- PAX has been sold out since, probably about 24 hours after tickets went on sale. But damn, this week there's also two sold out shows of Second City at Wolftrap and another two sold out shows of Demetri Martin at the 9:30 Club. Good thing I'm here to give you all these other alternatives, ね? Of course, you could always keep an eye out online - you never know when tickets are going to fall off the back of the truck.
Did we miss something? If you have an event you’d like to promote that isn’t on this list, leave a comment or email us. Other weekly recurring events are listed on our website (such as Rocky, CCG tournaments, crazy themed happy hours). For more information, check out the calendars at DC Geeks.
