Starting your week off right with a stunning photo from Dr. Sketchy's Houston (image by Ted Viens) |
Today
- Anti-Art - Roma Mafia at Dr. Sketchy’s - Baltimore, MD - 7:00PM
- We’re still having to get our Dr. Sketchy’s fixes up in Baltimore. So head up to the the ultra-geek-friendly Windup Space for the tonight’s event. In case you missed my last plug for the event, the rules are simple: Be over 18, bring drawing materials (no paint, no photos), and create like mad. Not an artist, you say? Well, if watching this doesn’t remind you that, yes, you actually are, then fine, you can stay home (and deprive the world of whatever it was you might have created, you selfish bastard).
BRB, must go art.
Tuesday
- Just Because - Gaelic Storm at the Birchmere - Alexandria, VA - 7:30PM (Tue & Wed)
- Is Celtic music geeky? Probably not, but the cult following of Boondock Saints and generic geekdom seem to form a venn diagram that is a nearly perfect circle. So I’m abusing my awe-inspiring power as writer of the events list to put this in here just because I fucking love Gaelic Storm. With a song called “The Night I Punched Russell Crowe,” what’s not to love?
Whether the songs are nautical or just naughty, I am an unabashed shanty addict. (image by Paul Wilkinson) |
Friday
- Pirates - Pirates for Sail at the Piratz Tavern - Silver Spring, MD - 8:00PM
- Are you like me? (I’m currently working to the heartbreaking dulcet tones of Stan Rogers’ “Northwest Passage” which explains the previous entry). I am an absolute addict for all music maritime. If you can identify, then you owe it to yourself to first hit up the Tavern for a grog, and then enjoy the performance by Pirates for Sail. We met up with them recently. I have it on good authority that by begging or bribery, they might perform those songs that are so salacious, they are only done live.
- Burlesque - Carnivalesque at 9th & Beats - Washington, DC - 9:00PM
- Carnivalesque looks over-the-top, even for our impressive local burlesque scene. With a list of featured performers as long as this has, it’s unsurprising that we have a few of our favorite local performers included. The words “immersive experience” should perk up your ears. “Try your hand at games of skill,” they say. Gigi, Cherie, Mab, whoever wrote the description has given me such a rare and glorious straight line that I have been struck mute. There are just too many jokes. (My bawdry aside, this event sounds astounding).
- Convention - StellarCon 37 - Greensboro, NC - Friday through Sunday
- “Thirty-seven? In a row?” Clerks references aside, you’re probably wondering why the hell I’m recommending that anyone hoof it down to North-Goddamn-Carolina. Well, one reason is that NC is likely to be about 10ยบ warmer down there. Another could be my notorious soft spot for student-run conventions (I mean, thirty-seven years? Mad props, y’all). But it’s actually their extensive guest list. If you’re a lit geek, and this isn’t on your radar - it should be. So if you’re looking for a reason to get out of the cold, grey city this weekend, go on an adventure and meet Eric Flint.
Did we miss something? If you have an event you’d like to promote that isn’t on this list, leave a comment or email us. Other weekly recurring events are listed on our website (such as Rocky, CCG tournaments, crazy themed happy hours). For more information, check out the calendars at DC Geeks.
