It's been [about] a year since we started doing the DC Geeks' Podcast! This week, we have a new segment from Jonah Knight, and the usual assortment of brilliance from myself, Brannen, and Scooter.
Jonah's Musical Corner
Behold Mikey! (image by Jonah & Mikey) |
Once again, Jonah Knight has taken the time to find new music so that you don't have to go begging your hipster friends for suggestions (like I keep doing - one can only listen to the only Postal Service album so many times). And he's found us Mikey Mason's new album called Barbarian Jetpack and a crazy hit song, "Best Game Ever."
Check out Mikey's website: www.mikeymason.com. Then get the song: http://mikeymason.bandcamp.com/album/barbarian-jetpack.
(Editor's note because Jonah doesn't tend to plug his own stuff: don't forget to thank him by visiting his website and listening to his podcast with Mikey, Pros and Cons).
One-Year Retrospective
When in doubt, light food on fire. (photo by saeru) |
Ok, we don't really do the retrospective in the episode, so here's the short version: One day we had a mic and a few drams of Tullamore Dew, and we made a podcast. Since then, we've been learning how to not interrupt ourselves and our guests, we've started slowly upgrading, and now we're here. We love doing this. We love meeting people. And we'd love to hear your recommendations for interviewees! (Email us!)
We jump right in (in medias res, if you feel like flexing that AP English term) by discussing our recent article series, "Minorities in Geek" that is shifting from its original focus of "Misogyny in Gaming." We have a few articles queued up before I post about the full reasoning for the change, but the tl;dr version is: less negative, more than gaming, and beyond women-only-focused to be more egalitarian. This evolved into a pretty interesting discussion about race.
If you're a listener who isn't really from the D/M/V area, and you're not used to the discourse community that comes along with national news being local news, this is like a window into what it's like. One of the biggest culture shocks that I ran into moving away from Bumfuck to the area was, "Oh my god, everyone up here has an in-depth and eloquent opinion on every political viewpoint and current event! How do I step up my game!?"
Our podcast is irresistible. (©Disney) Please don't sue. I just want people to buy Disney stuff. Also, blame Tumblr. |
Don't worry, around the 18 minute mark, we go straight back to local geek culture and our favorite upcoming White Wolf Kickstarters (like the Werewolf Apocalypse 20th Anniversary that raised 380k). Start saving now for Mage. There's Gravity Falls references, time travel help, Zelazny's Chronicles of Amber, and other wonderful nerdiness - like how I think less of anyone who hasn't watched Journey Quest.
After a year of podcasting, I'd love to introduce DJ, our new sound engineer. Is it wrong that I've been considering his help a pod-iversary gift to myself? He has thanklessly been saving my ass for weeks now, reducing my stress, my rage, and more by taking over the audio editing for our podcast (because this is how I was doing it). As far as I'm concerned, he's a wizard.
No link spam this week, just a sincere thank you to both Jonah and DJ for all their help on this episode. If you need more audio to get you in the gooshy mood for tomorrow, don't forget to check out Scooter's article on romantic geeky music (which, because I tinkered with the schedule we plug .
