This Week in Geek 2012/12/17

A showcase of this week's finest geek and geek-related activities for the week. Mark your calendars, and get out there for a touch of insanity to keep you going during this season.

Longer Term

  • Theater - You Can’t Get a Decent Margarita at the North Pole - Washington, DC - through Sunday
    • Our friends with Fringe are providing us with a Christmas tale that truly speaks to the DC worker - an overstressed Santa, an alcoholic Rudolph, and sexual advances from underlings while the spouse tries to get you to slow down. It’s like they know us!
Wednesday
  • Trivia - Rock Bottom Brewery Bar Trivia with Geek Night Out - Bethesda, MD - 7:00 PM
    • Remember the glory days of Quiz Bowl? Weekend nights spent at home furiously memorizing the Vice Presidents and every failed presidential candidate? Well, relive those glory days with beer... and more friends. (foreveralone.jpg)
Remember, don't be disappointed if there
aren't zombies. (photo by Colin Grey)
Thursday
  • Doomsday Pregaming - End of the World Gathering - Kensington, MD - 6:30 PM
    • The Bethesda Nerds with Wine meetup group has the right idea. If the doomsday is on Friday, how will you finish your wine with all the Mad Max wannabes raiding your favorite hangouts? The right way to do ensure that your gathering goes undisturbed by raiders, looters, zombies, or worse... casuals, is to host it on the last guaranteed non-doomsday this week.
  • GWAR - GWAR at the 930 Club - Washington, DC - Gwar PM
    • If you enjoy dark humor and hard riffs; if you value a stage show as much as speaker volume; if you can deal with spattering fluids coating the audience, then tell me how it is you’re not already holding tickets for this show? Billing themselves as the world’s only openly alien band, the costumes have just gotten more amazing, the stage presence just more impressive over the years. I’ll still argue that they’re one of the earliest and angriest geek bands of the era.
Friday
  • FINALLY - Totally not doomsday - Everywhere - All day
    • Happy Solstice / Awakening  / Yule / Winter to you, though. Imagine a day where we are free, free to not have to explain to people the nuances of ancient time-keeping devices through historical or scientific research and rigor. What if you never had to spell check “apocalypse” again!? Imagine the bright beauty of a world where no one feels compelled to talk about crappy speculative movies like 2012. Today will truly be a wonderful day - though you may want to stay inside and bar your doors, you know, just in case other people get freaked out.
  • Art - Artpocalypse 2012 - Washington, DC - 7:00 PM
    • More than 20 artists from the region got together to put into their mediums what the end of the world might look like. Nifty enough, but then the magic happens. What magic? The magic of satire. The show goes on to present the artists’ parodies of those world ending events, and sarcasm is forever geek territory.
  • Music - End of the World at Black Cat - Washington, DC - 9:00 PM
    • The band line up is The A.K.’s, the Max Levine Ensemble, the Shirks, and Booze Riot. How, in all those years of “That would be a GREAT band name!” did we not all come up with “Booze Riot”?? I mean seriously, great band name or greatest band name? Either way, there are worse places to hide out through the apocalypse.

Saturday
  • Comics - A Very Deadpool Christmas - Annapolis, MD - 11:00 AM
    • And comics for this week (and comic...) If you’ve not had a chance to meet Deadpool’s voice(s) and bask in the insanity, then get yourself over to Third Eye Comics this weekend. You’ll have the chance to meet Brian Posehn, and the first 40 get a shot at a Deadpool gift to start their holidays off right.
  • Gaming - StreetPass DC Holiday Party - Washington, DC - Noon
    • You’ll need to RSVP, but that’s not a high price to pay for a night of Nintendo love and gamer company. Grab your system and head down there for the company, for the competition (I’m waiting to see who the Super Smash Bros. champion is, personally), and even rumors of prizes. Or, show up with an oldie like TWEWY and grab ALL the MPP because there are so many other DS owners online.

Did we miss something? If you have an event you’d like to promote that isn’t on this list, leave a comment or email us. Other weekly recurring events are listed on our website (such as Rocky, CCG tournaments, crazy themed happy hours). For more information, check out the calendars at DC Geeks.
