This Week in Geek 2012/11/12

A showcase of this week's finest geek and geek related activities for the week. Mark your calendars.

Nano'ers, try to remember the romantic innocence that convinced you
this would be easy. Then, get mad and write. <3 (image by Ben Sutherland)

Monday
  • NaNoWriMo - Write-ins with the DC Speculative Fiction Writers' Group - TBA - 7:00PM
    • Every Monday, this writers' group is hosting write-ins for those of you slugging through NaNoWriMo. The catch is that the locations are only shown to meetup members (I assume that's so they can get accurate rsvp numbers for events). If you're looking for a change of pace or writing buddies, give their meetup site a look.
Wednesday
  • Burlesque - DC Variety Show at Red Palace - Washington, DC - 9:00PM
    • The Red Palace's event description promises sultry music and an array of burlesque performers. Although we all love a good themed-show (Dr. Who, D&D, etc), sometimes it's good to step back and just watch local, excellent burlesque for its own sake. Besides, what's a better way to get through the mid-week?
Thursday
  • 3D Printing - Reston Location for the International Maker Meetup - TBD - 7:00PM
    • NOVA Makers group is participating in the MAKE International Meetup. They need RSVPs in order to determine what location will be able to host the Reston group, so if you're interested join their meetup group now. I know a lot of people who don't have the cash to drop on a 3D printer but are very interested in trying one out, so this event's for you. (Not sure which of the two above links is better for RSVPs, so you may want to add both groups).
  • CCG - Magic:The Gathering at Books-A-Million - Waldorf, MD - 6:00PM
    • Ok, you all know that I love trawling Meetup, and here's a group for you Marylanders: Southern Maryland Gaming. At the moment, there's already a few dozen members. Most of the tabletop and mini gaming location are hidden except to members, so this week's public event is a great chance to stop in and check out the group. Besides, worst case scenario: you show up, chicken out, and you're still in a bookstore. It's an event that's socially-awkward-penguin-proof!
Yup, still not tired of using memes for my images. (I first found this here)
Friday
  • FutureTense - Dark Money, Media, and the 2012 Campaign - Washington, DC - 9:30AM
    • Know what's better than just bashing whichever political figure you hate least? Bashing fucking Citizens United. But if you want more highbrow than just an online venting session about the vast amount of money pissed away in the election, visit out this week's Future Tense discussion. The presenters include Michael Copps (former FCC Commissioner), Ellen Miller (exec. director of the Sunlight Foundation), and other journalists, professors, and SMEs.
Saturday
  • Kidlings - Pokemon Classes at Labyrinth - Washington, DC - 5:00PM
    • This week's event is full, but the link above has a contact for adding yourself to the waiting list. I'm including it here so geek parents should keep an eye out for the next class. I grew up wanting to play CCGs, but no one around to teach me how (oddly enough, you can't hand a 10yo the Star Wars CCG starter instructions and hope for the best: bitter.jpg). Conversely, just because you're happy your kid is starting into CCGs doesn't mean you want to relearn all the rules for Pokemon. Labyrinth is solving both problems: $30 for the cards, two kid-free hours to yourself, and they learn a new game.

Did we miss something? If you have an event you’d like to promote that isn't on this list, leave a comment or email us. Other weekly recurring events are listed on our website (such as Rocky, CCG tournaments, crazy themed happy hours).
