This Week in Geek 2012/09/03

A showcase of this week's finest geek and geek related activities for the week. Mark your calendars.

Longer Term

  • Con - Baltimore Comic-Con - Baltimore, MD - Saturday and Sunday
    • Couldn't make it to #SDCC? Here's your chance to fill your friends' twitter feeds with your convention antics and celebrity sightings. Keep an eye out for Stan Lee and the host of other awesome guests. I hear the costume contest is going to be top notch.

I don't know if the contest has a category for
"creepiest costume" but this one is a winner.

Wednesday
  • Comp Sci - The Elements of Computing Systems at HacDC - Washington, DC - 8:00PM
    • HacDC occasionally does these great introductory classes for various topics. TECS is a course on the basics of CS that “begins with binary logic gates and works up... to building high-level programming languages.” If you’re interested, remember rsvp on Meetup, and consider joining HacDC as a full member. This week is orientation including getting the textbook and software setup.
Friday
  • Comedy - Found Footage Festival at the Drafthouse - Arlington, VA - 7:20PM
    • With some of the comedic genius from The Onion and the Late Show, the Found Film Festival has added the Arlington Drafthouse as a stop on their 50 state tour. Joe Pickett and Nick Prueher host the showing in person. Check out their description of this unique combination of live comedy and hilarious or bizarre videos here on YouTube.

Saturday
  • Board Games - Grand Gaming Melee with AARRGH - Alexandria, VA - 10:30AM
    • This one is a straightforward potluck game day. Everyone brings a favorite game (although it sounds like Euro style games are in favor), comes ready to teach their game and learn someone else’s. Oh, and snacks. Bring along a favorite munchie to share and enjoy with others. At the Sherwood Library this time around, so I can use every DC-dweller’s favorite phrase “free parking.”
  • M:tG - Magic: the Gathering celebration at Labyrinth Games - Washington, DC - 12:00PM
    • Its still hard to for me to grok that Magic is still going strong after all these years. But events like the one at Labyrinth this week prove to me that the game and the hobby are still out there. They’re setting out tables for new players, folks that want to play through the basic styles, including a small tournament for the less experienced players. They’re also setting up room for the longer time players and those deeper into the game. Seating is first come, first serve, but expect to mix it up as the day goes on.

One of my favorite of our images from MAGFest (and my initiation to Super Art Fight!)
Sunday

Did we miss something? If you have an event you’d like to promote that isn’t on this list, leave a comment or email us. Other weekly recurring events are listed on our website (such as Rocky, CCG tournaments, crazy themed happy hours). For more information, check out the calendars at DC Geeks.
