This Week in Geek 2012/08/06

A showcase of this week's finest geek and geek related activities for the week. Mark your calendars.
Longer Term
  • Movies - Dr. Strangelove - Silver Spring, MD - Friday through next Thursday
    • As part of the AFI Silver's Stanley Kubrick film series, Dr. Strangelove will have several showings this week and next. Don’t let the age of the film fool you. If you haven’t before witnessed the prescient madness of the movie, you’ll likely either be weeping or howling by the end of it. I envy those of you who are getting to see it for the first time on a big screen.

Wednesday
  • Science - She Blinded Me with Science! Geek Night Out - Washington, DC - 6:00PM
    • Geek Night Out is meeting for Happy Hour at the Science Club. While the Science Club's website leaves much to be desired, they make up for it with their events and quirky atmosphere. Get over the mid-week (no, I won’t call it “Hump Day”) with a cold one and maybe a few new friends.
Thursday
  • Literature - Discussion: The Man in the High Castle - Washington, DC - 7:00PM
    • Phillip K. Dick’s The Man in the High Castle includes Nazi and Japanese occupied America, legalized slavery, and I Ching. If you thought his writing stopped with synthetic humans and mental invasions you owe it to yourself to devour the book and then go hash it out with well-read strangers.
Friday
  • Moon Nazis - DC Geeks Presents Iron Sky - Fairfax, VA - 7:30PM
    • Tick-tock, tick-tock! There are only eight tickets left! If you love bad movies (and even the characters laugh at the premise), this is worth checking out. If the moon Nazis don’t make you laugh, then the idiocy of President Palin probably will. We hope to see you on Friday.
  • Gaming - Area 42 Open Gaming Night - Dulles, VA - 7:00PM
    • Hidden above Affinity Computers, there will be an awesome night of games and demos. At 8:00, Area 42 Games is hosting the M:tG League Season End Tournament. The Area 42 guys are awesome, and for only $3 the event is well worth the price of admission.
Saturday
  • Meetup - Nerd Lunch - Arlington, VA - 2:00PM
    • It’s nerds and food with AC on a hot summer day. Really, what more do you want? Well, point taken, but that’s not in the budget and this is. By the time this is published the event may be full up, but check in with the meetup group anyway to RSVP or ask about alternatives.
  • Gaming - Labyrinth Games hosts a Celebration of Board Games - Washington, DC - All Day
    • Labyrinth Games once again is inviting game designers to spend the day showing you (yes, you, Madame!) how to play their games. Some tournaments start in the morning and then the afternoon is full of new games, their designers, and people eager to play. It sounds like a good time to us.

This is nearly identical to how I spent my Sunday.

  • Anime - DC Anime Club Screening - Washington, DC - 2:00PM
    • This Saturday is the annual movie screening held by the DC Anime Club. It’s in the District itself, with two metro stations literally a block away. The movie is still unannounced, but worst case scenario you get exposed to a movie you wouldn’t have watched on your own.
Sunday
  • Comedy - Ragnarok with Evan Valentine - Washington, DC - 8:00PM
    • Performances by Evan Valentine, Jake Young, Mike James, and music by the Champions. Evan Valentine and Jake Young are part of the Geek Comedy Tour, who I’ve always found to be hilarious. The event is also a CD recording, so your heckling could be enshrined in muffled background noise for future generations (I am kidding, please don’t be that guy). Head over to Black Cat and enjoy the ensuing hilarity.

Did we miss something? If you have an event you’d like to promote that isn’t on this list, leave a comment or email us. Other weekly reoccurring events are listed on our website (such as Rocky, CCG tournaments, crazy themed happy hours). For more information, check out the calendars at DC Geeks.
