Podcast - Area 42 and Tales of the Left Hand

Our Fourth of July podcast episode is our interview with Joe Hines of Area 42 Games and John Meagher, author and narrator of Tales of the Left Hand.

The answer to Life, the Universe, and Gaming
Joe describes how Area 42 evolved out of a common concern, "what would I do if I couldn't work?" and grew into the online and by-appointment store that it is. We first met up with Joe at the DC Geeks event Avengers and Shawarma, and started talking about all the great meet ups that have come out through the Area 42 community. Joe also indulged us as Brannen and I spoke with him about our mutual hobby of homebrewing. We also got to talk about how Mysticon congoers treat Area 42 right.

Swashbuckling, intrigue, and a dash of magic

Rather than the usual distribution cycle from print to audio book, John seems to have made his niche by working the other way around. Out of his love for radio dramas, he began writing weekly cliffhangers. When friends demanded that he stop leaving them hanging, John switched to being "an author who also narrates, and not the other way around.

The take-away from our guests was to never talk yourself out of trying something you're passionate about because you're afraid to fail. No matter what skill you hope to pick up, you'll suck at it, and you have to push through that phase and learn and develop your abilities. John's example is that if you're a writer who's turned down by a publisher, you're no worse off than you were before sending it in. If you're lucky, you might get feedback with the rejection. Try again.

The audio book excerpt begins at 41:45. If you've only got time for a few minutes, check out that portion. The mp3 for the book is here (the file will autoplay).

Thank to Joe and John for the interview. Happy Independence Day to all of you. Hope you guys got to check out some amazing fireworks this evening. On a non-interview note, we're looking for ideas for new events and merch. If you have any ideas, please send us an email.
