"I want to go to there." (via slgckgc) |
A showcase of this week's finest geek and geek related activities for the week. Mark your calendars.
Longer term
- Convention - New York Comic Con - New York, NY - Thursday through Sunday
- New York really is just a hop, skip, and a jump from us. I haven't even gotten to the end of the guests page, and already I'm sad that I can't make it: Doc Hammer, Felicia Day, Jay & Silent Bob, Mark Hamill, Jewel Staite... The single day tickets are sold out, but there's still a few weekend passes left. Snag one, go, and post many #NYCC tweets so that I may live vicariously through you!
- Art - Clown Cabaret - Washington, DC - 8:00 PM
- Here is the list of performers for the night. I love the line up. Two dudes and a dog, a guy who is "very, very funny," the founder of the Cheeky Monkey Sideshow, and one MFA recipient from the Shakespeare Theater Company's Academy for Classical Acting at the George Washington University with a well-written bio and a professional headshot. The Clowns look like they put on a fun, eclectic sideshow. In case you missed it, here's Scooter's review.
- Music - Yuck at Black Cat - Washington, DC - 8:00 PM

- General - The Science of Fear: Is it All in Your Head? - Washington, DC - 6:30 PM
- The title of the presentation reminds me of the awesome Warehouse 13/Eureka crossover a few weeks ago. If you'd rather listen to fascinating geeky science stuff on your Wednesday, check out this talk at the Koshland Science Museum. According to the website, you must be 18+ to attend.
- Festivals - Kids Euro Festival: Copernicus' Star - Washington, DC - 1:00 PM
- Have kids who don't mind subtitles? Love the geocentric model of our solar system? Think you could stand 90 minutes of Polish anime? I just found the trailer and it is amazing. And by "amazing" I mean "it reminded me of a 3rd gen VHS rip of a Hong-Kong-dubbed Slayers episode I saw in 1998." At this point, I may need to see this out of pure fascination.
- Art - Opening of Lost and Found: The Secrets of Archimedes - Baltimore, MD - 10:00 AM
- To give some backstory: in 1229, a priest erased the only surviving copy of several works of Archimedes and wrote a prayer book over top of them. And by doing science to it, researchers have regained the original text. The exhibition expands from simply the Archimedes Palimpsest to include other examples of the interaction between science, history, and art.
- Comedy - Paul and Storm - Vienna, VA - 7:00 PM
- Paul and Storm are some awesome funny music people... musical comics... what have you. As far as I'm concerned, their best stuff is Opening Band and Nun Fight. They opened for Johnathan Coulton for years, and I'm proud to say that they are doing more solo shows now. They are more than funny enough to see in their own right.
An exciting week! Get to it! Other weekly reoccurring events are listed on our website (such as Rocky, CCG tournaments, crazy themed happy hours). For more information, check out the calendars at DC Geeks.
